NAET and/or air purifiers for asthma & allergy

We have numerous allergies, asthma and a cat (to which some are allergic).

I am researching NAET for relief from allergies - is anyone familiar with it?

Also wondering what kind of results folks have had with air purifiers (i.e. Sanuvox for HVAC system, or room units) or air filters (i.e. Honeywell electrostatic for furnace). Anyone know anything about ionizing purifiers or those that emit ozone to purify the air (I am still unclear as to whether they are one ane the same).

I've heard of NAET, and can find no studies (clinical, double-blind kind) that show it is any better than sacrificing black chickens. It only works if you believe it does, which is not science.

Considering that ozone is a well-known respiratory irritant, one would think that something that generates it would be the last thing you want in your house. Both ionizing purifiers and ozone generators can pollute your house to well above the level that would have a city calling a bad air day.

We're down to environmental controls - the usual routine of removing dust trap surfaces, decluttering, using HEPA filters when you vacuum, and using really good air filters in your HVAC system. Start with the cheapest remedies and continue until you feel better. Have a friend come in to do the dusty part of a thorough cleaning, and leave you to maintain them

Also, consider using one of the allergy suppressants, such as Claritin, because if you keep the symptoms down you will have fewer problems with the asthma.

The AirSource 3000 is a terrific air purifier designed to work safely and effectively in spaces up to 3000 square feet. It utilizes a new technology called photohydroionizationÂ to clean the air by producing superoxide ions and hydroperoxides or "friendly cleansers". I have Ionic breeze machines in the master bedroom and DD's room. And in the bathroom that houses the cat's litter box, I use a filter that plugs into an outlet and has charcoal filtering. I got it at Target and it is called TrueAire. It really keeps the kitty odor away! The ionic breezes really trap a lot of dust, etc, and I felt like they really helped a lot last winter during flu season to help us breathe well while sleeping.

We must have been posting at the same time...... Sable - he does wheeze during his coughing attack. Luckily my FIL is a doc & he has come by daily to check his lungs. That is great about your son taking care of his own meds.....shoot, I'm just trying to get this boy to remember to brush his teeth daily when he wakes up!! Golddust - he has a major sinus infection now. They did a CT scan & showed the cavities or rather not showing the maxillary cavity b/c it is so congested. Segbrown - I am glad Flonase is working for you. My DH uses that also. We are using inhalers that have the fine powder that comes out - he was having a difficult time knowing when to inhale & push the inhaler. I find myself wanting to twist & cock the inhaler for him but he has to be able to do it himself & he does. Total fluke about getting tested for allergies.....I had an appointment b/c of a rash on my arm. Asthma doc & FIL worked together many years ago so FIL tells me to take my DS with me to my appointment just to make sure he was not missing anything. So, I call to ask if I can bring my son & Dr. says yes. Well, after they did that testing on his back - my rash was never mentioned!! I am so grateful that we took him and had him tested b/c this explains so much. I am totally rambling but I really appreciate the support. Smiles:)

Thank you all for your stories and experiences. Gives me hope that there are people out there with allergies that still manage to live with beloved pets. I just can't imagine my life without pets (cats especially.. I love dogs but my life is not condusive to dogs at the moment). So it looks like it will take a little effort on both our parts to make this work. He will have to experiment with different allergy medications and I will encourage him to talk to his doctor about different prescription medications, rather than just OTC stuff. And I saw a HEPA air purifier at Costco for a pretty decent price yesterday ($199 I think). Although I read the box and it didn't specifically mention pet dander.. but it would probably help I would think. Also yes, unfortunately I am a carpet person. I find that hardwood floors are too hard to keep clean.. the dust just goes flying everywhere, whereas with carpet you just run a vacuum over it and everything is sucked up (I also just got a brand new Hoover WindTunnel and love it!) Not to mention I love the feel of carpet much better on my toes than hardwood. Also I found that with my late sweetheart, Jelika, in my previous place I had hardwood and it was murder on her poor arthritic bones, but when I moved to carpet she was able to get around much easier and with a lot less pain. When I first moved to my current home it seemed like the carpet took years off her and she was moving like a 15 year old rather than an 18 year old! I truly believe she could have made it another couple of years if it wasn't for that horrible lung cancer. And with my current kitty, Kitty being about 12 years old I don't want her to have any unnecessary joint pain either. So again I really do appreciate your ideas/suggestions, and hope that we will be able to find a comfortable way to all live (one day) in the same household.

Well, I checked them out a little,..the Blueair gets .003 microns out of the air, the whirlpool .3 microns,..not sure if they mean the same, a micron is meant in thousand, so I would think both are removing the same, 3 mircrons. Both are costly in filter replacement, guess that has to be expected. I think some offer free filters for several years,..please do a little more research. One downside to the Blueair 650E's use of ionization is that it emits ozone, though it meets FDA standards for ozone emissions. It's capable of cleaning rooms up to 698 square feet. Filters for both the IQAir models and the Blueair 650E are expensive, but the Blueair 650E requires filter replacements every six months, adding to the overall cost.

We have a Honeywell HEPA air cleaner in our bedroom and family room, and an old Kenmore ionizer cleaner in the office. The HEPA filters make a world of difference to my husband, we have two cats and he has allergies and asthma.
