neti pot question-tap water?

Posted by flowersnow (My Page) on

I just got a neti pot and was wondering if anyone uses tap water or distilled as recommended?

The first few times I used it, it really opened up my sinuses. But this morning, the water wouldn't/couldn't go anywhere. It's like I'm closed up, but further up. I can breath thru my nose.

I think you can use tap water, but if its chlorinated, I would collect some and let it sit for a day, until the chlorine has dissipated. I used well water. Just be sure to use the right amount of salt and sodium bicarb to make the water the right pH. Otherwise, the tap water will really hurt your mucous membranes.
Rinsing with a neti pop is supposed to ONLY rinse out your lower nose........not your sinuses. The water is only supposed to go up high enough to come out the other nostril.
If you can't do that, then your nose must really be swollen.

It says on the bottle to boil the water and let it cool. If you can't get the water to drain out your nostrils, it also says to stop as you may do damage to the sinus area. It denotes that your sinuses are really inflammed.
