HMO wont allow skin test for Allergy shots

I have terrible allergies to cats, dogs, dust, and some pollens. I wanted to try allergy shots, but they wonÂt allow me to do the skin testing until I can come off of Zyrtec, and the other things I take for my allergies. If I could survive without antihistamines for a month, I would not even consider taking allergy shots.

This is a vicious cycle. I canÂt come off my allergy medications, so I canÂt take the skin tests, so I canÂt take the allergy shots, so I canÂt get better. I donÂt understand why I canÂt take the skin test anyway, because the zyrtec does not get rid of all my symptoms, so there would still be a reaction to cats, dogs and dust. That is all I really need shots for those are the big three. I already know I am allergic to them.

I have both cats and dogs as pets, I try to avoid dust when possible, but even before I had cats and dogs as pets, I was still hooked on antihistamines, and could not sleep without them. If I am having a running nose, and watery eyes, and terrible itching on my face, and eyes, it really interferes with getting a good nightÂs sleep.

I can see no point in giving up my pets when I would still have allergies no matter what. I can't live in plastic bubble for a month. I have to live in the world. As I am past 40 each year my allergies become a little worse. I don't know what I can do now.

I'm pretty sure there may be some medicines you can take closer to the day of testing that you wouldn't haven't to be off of for a whole month. I would bet there are a lot of people in you situation, so your doctor's office should have some recomendations for you. If they don't help, consider asking another doctor altogether; some may have less strict rules about how long you have to be off what.

I know there is also a blood test allegy test you can do. Not sure if you have to be off meds for those tests. I don't think they're as accurate, but maybe you could use those results instead to get your allegy shots.

If you do need to be off the meds for a while and you know what you are allergic to, try to take precautions. Keep pets out of your bedroom. For dust mites: Encase your mattress in dust mite protector and wash your pillows and bedding weekly. Also wash or get rid of curtains, vacuuum with allergen filter, etc... As I would bet you know, it's not the dust that you can see that causes the most problems.

They did the blood test, and I found out it showed I was allergic to cats, dogs, and mold, so far, but I am still working on checking. If they won't do the skin test without me going off them, I can do it for one night, but I am not sure if I can go for more then that. I have several more appointments.

Your itching because your body is trying to detoxify from all the crap the doctors are feeding u. Your are right on with the stinging nettle and other herbs. But allopathic pharmaceutical chemicals I am not fond of, to say the least! If you truly want to get better get the book"Detox miracle sourcebook by dr.Robert morse". If you don't have the money he has thousands of free videos on YouTube addressing nearly every problem. He basically puts his patients of herbs and raw foods to alkalize and therefore detoxify the lymphatic system,etc. He has a 95% cure rate in cancer, etc... Dr Robert morse on YouTube, it's free, minus well give him a shot. I'm telling u gin experience, he saved my life! Best of health Joe

We must have been posting at the same time...... Sable - he does wheeze during his coughing attack. Luckily my FIL is a doc & he has come by daily to check his lungs. That is great about your son taking care of his own meds.....shoot, I'm just trying to get this boy to remember to brush his teeth daily when he wakes up!! Golddust - he has a major sinus infection now. They did a CT scan & showed the cavities or rather not showing the maxillary cavity b/c it is so congested. Segbrown - I am glad Flonase is working for you. My DH uses that also. We are using inhalers that have the fine powder that comes out - he was having a difficult time knowing when to inhale & push the inhaler. I find myself wanting to twist & cock the inhaler for him but he has to be able to do it himself & he does. Total fluke about getting tested for allergies.....I had an appointment b/c of a rash on my arm. Asthma doc & FIL worked together many years ago so FIL tells me to take my DS with me to my appointment just to make sure he was not missing anything. So, I call to ask if I can bring my son & Dr. says yes. Well, after they did that testing on his back - my rash was never mentioned!! I am so grateful that we took him and had him tested b/c this explains so much. I am totally rambling but I really appreciate the support. Smiles:)

lablover4ever, allergies are diagnosed both in dogs AND humans by what is known as an "elimination diet" as Meghane above suggested. An elimination diet consists of feeding only a bare minimum of ingredients for a specified period of time, then slowly adding in other ingredients to find out where the reaction to the ingredient occurs. The ONLY commercial food that I know of designed for this specific purpose is "California Natural" by NaturaPet. It is expensive. Quite honestly, I fed it to my epileptic dog for 3 years watching his seizure triggers for any signs and his allergies. He has both problems. We discovered what his allergies were -- and his seizure triggers -- by using this method, and then were able to switch him to a less expensive food. If this may be the case for you, then I'd suggest that food. The problem with many commercial foods is you can't trust the big bag label. While they may say they are "lamb and rice", if you read the fine print, they also contain corn, rosemary, and many other ingredients. The first 5 ingredients are the most copious in a food. Look for pure ingredients. If it is lamb and rice for example, then that is ALL it should contain. Add in other ingredients after that, and see if sensitivities re-occur. Bear in mind, it takes about 8 weeks for sensitivities to ingredients to manifest. So make any changes sloooooooowly. A good rule of thumb is, "the devil is in the details". It's also in the fine print on the ingredient label, not the big label on the front of the bag.

The thought of a veterinary school never crossed my mind. I will surely look into that. Thank you Mariend and Sue for bringing that up. Wow mariend, the secretary at my vet office said that he could be allergic to a number of different things. I never thought sun light could be one of them! I bet that was shocking to you when you first found out about it. We live in an apartment building. They do use the fertilizer on their grass but they haven't for about 6 months now. We have only lived here for about a year though, so again Stanley would have been having his issues way before then. Lydia, I used to shampoo my carpets VERY frequently before we moved here. Now I never do it as I'm not sure if I am allowed to do it on my own. That was a good thought though. I have book marked the page that you put a link to. I will show it to DH. Thank you so much. Lisa, the vet just mentioned his ears the last time we were there. She said that they look great and she suggested that I continue with the drops twice a week for the rest of his life. So I will surely do that. And I am thinking that we are going to go ahead with the thyroid testing first. Hopefully they will find something then. That is what my vet is really pushing for. And then if nothing shows up from that I guess the only thing left to do then would be the allergy testing. I am very glad that i have posted this. Honestly at this point DH feels just really peeved with the vets. We have been to 2 now within the last 3 years. And like I said, the one said it was a bad habit. DH feels that an allergy test should have been discussed as an option from the very beginning with this 2nd vet once they told us it was allergies. I'm kinda confused as to why it wasn't mentioned before now as well. We didn't even know it was an option. I mean I knew that humans had them done but I'd never heard of it being done on a pet before. So here we are, now having spent well over $1,000 in vet bills alone and we have made absolutely no progress at all. We aren't rich by any means. Sorry for venting. In my doctor's office they had an article about people rubbing their cats with distilled water to help people with allergies. I am allergic to cats and DIL has two. I have been on allergy shots now for over 6 years for molds, grasses, but I was told that at that time there wasn't really a proven allergy serum for cats. Now I understand there is but I don't really want to start over. I am down now to one shot a month. The shots really helped my itchy eyes and throat right away more than congestion, although I have fewer sinus headaches and infections. my sense of smell never returned. My doctor says he has never seen me not congested nasal wise but I have learned to live with that as long as the itchy eyes and throat are gone. I can't go off the shots till I am off the Allerga totally and am now only taking it on rare occasions. For your tests to be accurate you do have to be free of the medicine, otherwise your serum wouldn't be effective.

Distilled water is not needed. Just give the cat a bath or have him groomed with warm water and mild shampoo once a month.
