Comments (10)The fence situation is the kink of the whole property, and is causing me the biggest grief right now. What you can't tell from the photo is that the pool is actually raised higher than the yard behind it, and there is approximately 10 feet behind/between the pool fence and the split rail fence that runs the perimeter of the yard. The lattice is largely there for privacy, as none of the pools in our area have fences for code. Neighborhood rules dictate that you can have a privacy fence around your pool, provided it's far enough back from the property line. (Where the split rail fence is) I want to do just what you're saying, but it would be ALOT of money right now. They'd basically have to come in and build a new retaining wall behind the pool, add fill dirt to bring the surface level with the existing pool deck to expanding the area (to allow for flowers and the like), and then we could fence around that. However, we would then be very close to the setback requirements. Arrgghhhhh....... Since we're so far over budget on the interior renovation, this project may have to wait until next year. :(...See MoreFinally got my sansevieria outside
Comments (17)Thank you Manuel. The Rhipsalis pilocarpa has always hung in our bay window, first downstairs then upstairs. It is a south window that is blocked by a tree so it gets east light and some west. Thirty years ago we removed the ceiling in the bedroom where the bay window is. Comments (6)Hi Everyone. Dave - That's a great healthy looking Vriesea you have there which I think is possibly Vriesea 'Evita'. It obviously enjoys hanging in the oak tree with abundant circulating air. I also grow some of mine hanging in the shade house for the same reason and likewise get good results. Although you will notice the inflorescence doesn't have as many branches as the one shown on the BCR . See: http://registry.bsi.org/?genus=VRIESEA&id=8569#8569 you need to consider the BCR example was grown by Deroose Bromeliads in Belgium who are specialist growers of Vrieseas. When we compare plants like this with pictures on the BCR we always must consider who grew the other plant and what conditions it would have been grown under. In this case Deroose Plants who are a massive organisation with its main business in Belgium as well as others in China and USA. Growing conditions in these places are the best they can be with watering, feeding, lighting, air circulation and temperature all controlled automatically. So with conditions being optimum like this we must expect premium results in the flowering, hence the multiple branches on the plant shown in the BCR picture. I have grown the plant for some years and I find it a very good grower and pupper and an interesting feature is the way in which it responds to the amount of light it is grown under. As the pictures below of my plants show, when grown under normal light for Vrieseas (a little shadier than for Neo's) the foliage colour is as shown (Pic 1). However if it is grown in bright light (not full sun) e.g. hanging right up beneath the shade cloth of the shade house roof, there will be more yellow and less orange in the bracts and the foliage will take on more of a light brownish colour which contrasts nicely with the yellow flowers.(Pic 2). Both of the plants pictured below came from the same original Mother plant and it just shows how much light effects the plant colour. Vriesea 'Evita' grown on a bench beneath 50% green shade cloth. Vriesea 'Evita' grown hanging just 15 cm. beneath a 75% beige shade cloth shade house roof. Keep up the good work and keep the pictures of your plants coming. Comments (32)Thanks leona, there is no pattern. I made it up as I went along. I guess it would be similar to a balloon shade. It's a big rectangle, double the fabric width, with a rod pocket on the top and the fabric is gathered on the rod. The bottom is hemmed and pleated up 4" each pleat, 3 times. I then stitch vertically through the pleats at about 13" intervals...whatever comes out even. When you hang it, you just poke out the pleats at the bottom to make the balloon....See Morebulldinkie
