Stiff and sore muscles
Comments (22)Have you tried a magnesium supplement? I don't think it will have any effect if your problem is bone-related (eg from a damaged disc), but the effect will seem miraculous if the problem is muscle-related. I use a brand that I think is available only here in Australia, but I'll list the ingredients so you can look for something similar in your country if you're interested: 200 mg Mag orotate (eq. 13 mg mag) 200 mg Mag aspartate (eq. 13.4 mg mag) 150 mg Mag amino acid chelate (eq. 30 mg mag) 80 mg Mag phosphate (eq 16.5 mg mag) It contains no salt, sugar, dairy, gluten etc. = 73 mg total elemental magnesium content Dosage for adults: 1 or 2 tabs per day. It was the only thing that helped relieve the pain of sciatica until I could see the chiropractor (it was Easter), and in the following weeks while the chiropractic took effect. It also works magnificiently in eliminating cramps. A pregnant friend took a tablet after checking with her doctor, who told her that it was a waste of time although it wouldn't harm her or the baby. The cramps that had plagued her for weeks and sometimes even made breathing difficult disappeared within the hour. So I swear by it for almost immediate relief. In the long run, though, it's best to increase your intake naturally thru magnesium-rich foods, and of course to try all the other suggestions made on this board to see which work for you. Re arthritic problems, there are two herbs that work for my mother: 1 Ginger, a nob taken daily (she adds it to her cooked veggies). You just buy it weekly from the green grocer/supermarket. 2 Pennywort. This you need to grow yourself and consume fresh. It means finding a plant from a nursery, then growing it on (in the garden or in several pots) until you have enough to provide one large or two small leaves each day. It needs to accumulate in the body, so there's no point in starting it until you can secure a continuous supply. The taste is medicinal, so my mother just tries to swallow it without tasting it. BTW, ginger is wonderful for relieving nausea and preventing stomach upsets generally. I've also found that eating a knob every day prevents those debilitating menstrual cramps too, but this is another remedy that takes several weeks to kick in. (Magnesium doesn't seem to relieve these cramps, alas.)...See MoreSudden joint pain in finger
Comments (5)Jenn -- exactly the same thing happened to me. I cut my left index finger when peeling potatoes, and shortly thereafter the pain started. This has been going on for a couple months, and now I can definitely see a protrusion on the middle joint of the finger. I'm assuming it is arthritis. I'm starting to have real sympathy for people who have widespread arthritis....See MoreS.I. Joint problems?
Comments (28)jlc - I'm relieved that you've made an appointment with a physiatrist at an orthopedic office. I'm not sure how old you are or what other physical conditions may be involved but it's important to discover the nature of your back pain which may involve xRays and/or an MRI. I've been dealing with this for about 15 years - successfully I should add! I had trouble sitting for long periods and if I walked far there were times I would get a spasm in my thigh. The pain would often wake me up at night and Advil and a heating pad weren't very effective. My neighbor is a chiropractor and noticed that I had a little trouble getting up from a chair and that I didn't have normal range of motion in my head and neck when we spoke. He offered to see me in his office the following week. Later that night I mentioned it to DH who nixed the chiropractor and said it was time I saw a specialist recommended I see a neurosurgeon who works in the same medical building. After xRays and MRI's of my cervical and lumbar spine I discovered that I had severe degenerative disc disease (which isn't really a disease) - bulging discs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis and mild scoliosis. 15 years ago the treatment was 3 injections into the joint ( both hip and neck) spaced a week apart. I had them done under local anesthetic because then I could drive home. It took a few days but the pain subsided in both areas. The neurosurgeon advised that I lose weight and exercise. Since I already had surgery on one knee and knew that both knees would need replacement at some time he suggested water aerobics and walking. He also cautioned me about manipulative treatments since it could exacerbate my back problems. Those treatments worked for many years but I have returned for additional ones over the years. Now the treatment is only one injection into the joint. I also thought I had carpal tunnel syndrome - I would wake up many times during the night with numbness and tingling in my fingers and have to drop them over the side of the bed to get it to stop. But it turned out to be caused by the disc problems in my neck and while it hasn't completely disappeared it has been significantly reduced. December 8 isn't too far off and with any luck they'll have a cancelation and see you sooner. Good luck....See MoreSupplements for achy joints and muscles
Comments (70)I had shin splints once, terries. Wow, is that painful. Funny but I had them at the same time I was recovering from carpal tunnel surgery and everyone kept commiserating about my hand. My hand didn’t hurt at all but my shins were killing me. I actually got them from standing in too high heels on a stone patio for hours. Wish I’d known about turmeric then. Impressive that you do the Camino every year!...See Morebulldinkie
