| Does anyone have an air purifier? Have you noticed a difference in your house? Are ionizers or HEPAs better?
I can hardly sleep because of a stuffed up nose. I know our house has a lot of dust because I'm dusting every other week. I'm wondering if one of these would make a difference. I saw some inexpensive ones at Wal-mart $30, would that work?

Ionizers are not recommended by the lung assocation, however they do work i guess. I have a hepa filter one because we own Chinchillas, whom are very dusty! They actually bath in a dusty sand so it gets everywhere. It does work. However they are expensive. I have heard the oreck one also works well but that is also about 200 dollars. Also they only really clean a room at a time. You can't really clean your whole house unless you have alot of them. I would change your furnace filter to a nicer one, if you havne't tried that yet. also do you have rugs or hardwood? Everywhere I have lived has a lot of dust so I think that is just life. -renee |

| Definitely go with the HEPA filters. Sears has some good ones, the salesperson there can help you decide which is best for your home. We have one for each main room in the house and it helps immensely. Michelle |

| I can only tell you my experiences with air cleaners... Quite a few years back we bought an electronic air cleaner when the new furnace was installed... We had thought that was the best way to go because it had a built in ionizer and we could wash the filters... Well, I couldn't stand the smell of the ionized air and every time the furnace ran I had a fine dust all over everything... Next we had a Bonaire 2001 by BioTech... I picked it up at a second hand store and never really had the right filters for it... There were some in it but I tossed them out after measuring them and found something similar ( cut to fit air conditioner filters, foam rubber and the other kind ). That worked quite well for the odors and cigarette smoke... But.... It only worked for the one room and I had to leave it on the high speed setting, all the time and it was just too noisy... ( probably because it was so old ) Then I bought an air cleaner with a HEPA filter especially for the computer room, from Sears, because I do smoke while on the computer, the sales person assured me that it was more that adequate for the size of the room and it was on sale for $59... Well, it worked great for the first three weeks... No smoke in the air and the monitor screen stayed clean, no nicotine film and I only had it on while I was on the computer... Then I noticed an odor coming from the air cleaner... I checked the filters, the charcoal one had the smell and the HEPA filter was brown... I went to get filters and they wanted $50. just for the HEPA filter... Well I can't afford $50. every three weeks so I got rid of it. Although I've had bad luck with air cleaners they may work well for you but, I can tell you, none of them did a thing for the dust in the air... ( my whole house has carpet, even the kitchen. ) I still have to dust every week... Rita |

| Since my last post I too have been checking into air purifiers... I came across one that sounds very promising... It's called EdenPURE™ Area Air Purifier by BioTech... They say it "Eliminates odors, smoke, pollen, dust, bacteria, mold, CARBON MONOXIDE, pet dander, viruses and many more".... It goes on to say " It eliminates embedded urine (odor) in carpet, and cigarette smoke that's embedded in carpet, furniture, wallpaper and clothing. It also destroys mold and yeast." They say it has 4 mechanisms of eliminating pollution but neither the full page ad in the newspaper or the site tell you what they are... I've sent them mail asking about that and how it gets the smoke out of everything... When I hear back I'll report it here... I've included a link to the site... Rita |

| Well, I'm still not sure if I want to try the EdenPURE Area Air Purifier... Here's the letter I sent them.... Tell me more about the EdenPURE Area Air Purifier... I couldn't find a link to the product specs on your site... A full page ad in the Detroit Free Press ( 1/31/06 ) mentions that it has "4 mechanisms which eliminate pollution" but it doesn't actually explain what they are... The ad also says that "the EdenPURE... eliminates... cigarette smoke that is embedded in carpet, furniture, wallpaper and clothing." How is that possible? One of the testimonies says "I personally like the fresh smell the EdenPURE let off". What kind of smell is she eluding to? Ionized air??? Years ago I had an electronic air cleaner / ionizer installed on my furnace. I had it ripped out after only two weeks because I couldn't stand the smell and fine dust it deposited over everything... And here is their reply.... The EdenPure Air Purifier works in the following four ways: 1) Surface Sterilizer 2) Ozone 3) Advanced Filters 4) Negative Ions. The smell the unit emits is from ozone and negative ions. Thank you, Kristen Orion Customer Service It took them three days to reply and they didn't answer all my questions... If anyone else has tried one I'd sure like to know what they think of it... Rita |

| "Ozone" ... it's a lung irritant. A humidifier helps the "stuffy nose" syndrome better than an air filter. |

| I live on the coast so it is not a humidity issue. Mostly, I think it is a mold and dust problem. I just want to be able to breathe while I sleep. |

| The absolute best air purifier on the market today is the CaluTech series. I found them through the FDA website (Centers for Devices for Radiological Health divison). They have NASA technology with high output UV-C combined with nanotechnology (photocatalyst). These units can change carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (what we exhale) so any air purifier that can change something deadly into something neutral is all thumbs up with me. Their systems do the whole house, one single system. Don't waste your time with those WalMart 'Made in China' air purifiers, they're junk. I've tried them all. I used to wake up every morning with a stuffed up nose, was awful. After 24 hours with the CaluTech UV air purification system my problem was over, has been for 9 months now. |

| I had a UV Air Purifier put on my last new AC unit. I was very excited but am sorely disappointed about it's efficiency. I've seen no difference in the air collected on my old Sharper Image purifiers. I am considering going back to a HEPA filer and choking on the price of replacement filters but haven't decided on a brand yet. Am looking at the EdenPure and the Alen. Any users of them? |

| Sneak...my brother was just here from Denver. He said he quit his 1-2 glasses of wine and he has little trouble with the stuffy nose now. He used to not be able to sleep well at night because his nose got so stuffed up... |

UV air purifiers only kill bacteria and virus in the air they do not collect mold and dust. I recently did some research because we bought a new air purifier(filter). Ozone producing ones are BAD for your lungs. I mentioned this before also. DO NOT buy one that produces Ozone. Visit the american lung association site to read more on that. So we had a hepa filter, they work great, they are just expensive. So we recently bought the oreck cleaner and are pretty happy with it. It is MUCH louder than I thought it would be but it is not as loud as the hepa filtered cleaners. Anyways, I love to see how much junk the plates collect! It works really well with the dog dander and fur and seems to collect alot of dust also. It really reduced the "background" smells in our house. We have one for the bedroom and one for the living room and we need to clean it maybe once a month. We do not smoke. When I clean it I must say there looks to be alot of skin dander in there! (barf!) and the pre-filter is always caked with dog fur so it appears to be doing it's job. It is alot smaller than our HEPA filter machine also. I still dust once a week. I don't think that has changed. I think you would have to have a very big air cleaner to eliminate all the dust in your house. -renee |

| After I read about some of the air purifiers posted here and a few others I heard of I decided to do some of my own research. I did some very extensive research and I must say that CaluTech had a very informative website. This made me feel that their product must be very well made and that it would make a difference in my home. I have to rave about it because yes indeed it did make a difference. I suffer from allergies and so does my daughter, we have yet to find any relief from them until get this I myself installed the CaluTech Blue. I couldn't believe it they send you everything you need to install it besides the drill and the hole saw. Thank You Kevin because my daughter and I finally have relief from our allergies because of your posting. I actually get a good nights sleep now. |

| You will want to go with a HEPA air purifier. The state of California is going to require all air purifiers emit little to no ozone starting Oct 2010 and that should help to remove some of the gadgets from the market. |
