Help for a friend

I trying to help my friend who has been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. She is considering intraperitoneal therapy (called a belly-wash) where the drugs are delivered directly into the abdominal cavity and would very much like to talk to someone who has gone through this. She has researched this online - understands it from that point of view. Anyone?

Firstly, I hope your friend will have lots of love and support from family members and friends like yourself after receiving such devestating news. Unfortunately, after reading the link you provided, it appears that this is an extremely difficult to tolerate treatment, and I guess it comes down to which might mean more, quality of life or improving the odds of buying more time. You mentioned that your friend is stage 4 and it lists stage 3 as part of the criteria, so perhaps she should find out if she would even qualify for this treatment before investigating it further. If she can qualify, maybe she could get the opinion of at least 2 physicians as to whether a stage 4 cancer would also receive the same benefit of possibly prolonging her life, meaning will the outcome justify the side effects? My cousin lived five years (receiving just the standard chemo treatment) after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, despite being given less than 18 months. Of course no one knows whether she would have had longer if she had done both, but her quality of life was pretty good until the last few months. I wish your friend the best possible outcome and hope if she does go that route that it will turn out to be the best decision.

I know someone who was alive and well 4 years after recieving such a diagnosis and doing the "belly wash" treatments. I presume she is still well, but don't know. She is a friend of a friend and I had lunch with her.
Her first clue that something was seriously wrong was a severe cough....was treated for pneumonia before they discovered it was mestasticized ovarian cancer.
Sorry, I don't even remember her name let alone how to contact her.
I would tell your friend to go for it.....what does she have to lose...and much possibly to gain.

The warning label is actually pretty good. It nicely summarizes exactly what you need to know. The SDS is more detailed and fun to read, if you are into that kind of thing. But most consumers don't need that. I agree that the letters are small, and that can be problem. But there simply is so much information that they want to give and only relatively little space. If in doubt, you should assume that any cleaning supplies are potentially harmful. More often than not, that's probably true. If that isn't good enough and you really need to read everything, I have found my cell phone to be much more useful than a magnifying glass. Take a picture and then zoom in. Or even better, look at the picture on your computer screen. Then you can make all the letter really big.

I hope this is allowed, if not please let me know.I know this nice kid.He is 15 and is a great kid. He doesnt ask for alot, but he needs this expensive calculator for school. 'When he returns to rehab, my friend is going to need emotional support. I'm really baffled to know what to say. I know just listening is what is probably needed most, but how do I just listen without saying something?' That's the hard bit. When my mother had a bit of free time when her 5 kids had gone to school, she thought she might try her hand at becoming a councillor. She joined a group, headed by a councillor or maybe be was a psychiatrist. I can't remember. He explained that what they had to do, as councillors, was to listen. No talking. They were not to talk. They had to be quiet. The person with the problem was to do the talking, not them. So, the training started. He had them sit there, being silent. And then he asked them questions. (According to my mother.) My mother could not resist answering the questions. And she never became a councillor. I was telling my friend about this and my friend somewhat disagreed with the councillor/psychiatrist. My friend thought that sometimes we can suggest things to help. But I agree with the councillor/psychiatrist. The fact is, we know what we should do. And if someone tells us, then we can feel patronised. The definition of the the word patronise (she said, hoping not to sound patronising) is 'treat with an apparent kindness which betrays a feeling of superiority'. I looked up some synonyms for 'patronise' because I tend to over-use that word, but the definition was so nice that I wanted to include it here. I think that it's soooooo important never to come across that way, especially to someone who is going through something.
