How do you get your taste buds back?I can only taste sweets.

Have you tried a cleanse diet for a month to re-balance your body?

I have had the same problem for the past 2 years. I had a bad virus and it killed the nerves for the sense of taste and smell. It is called ANOSMIS. It is very rare that these senses come back.

December 2020.... Just made Snowballs (cookies rolled in powdered sugar) and the powdered sugar was the culprit. Tasted terrible. I've made these every year for years and years and this is the first batch I've made that came out bad. First I thought I was tasting soap from my hands... odd but I couldn't figure out any explanation. Rerinsed my hands and cookies still tasted like soap or perfume. I smelled the sugar (brand new bag, not expired) and the sugar in the bag smelled like perfume. I threw it out. Very disappointing. It was Walmart brand, in a plastic bag (no box). I will never buy that again. And I will also be careful about not storing it by anything with a scent. I don't know that I did, but it was downstairs in a bar that once had a scented dehumidifier in it, so that could have been the problem. But I store a lot of food in there (flour, nuts) and have never had that problem before. Glad I found this thread. Makes me feel like I'm not crazy. (Kids thought the cookies were good, at least.) Hmmm... now that I think about it, I've always bought confectioner's sugar in a bag (not a box). So I'm just going to not store it in that downstairs bar anymore (might be picking up a smell there) and I won't buy Walmart brand again (that might not have been it, but better safe than sorry).

Like Ann T and Seagrass, you can have all my fruit. I'll eat them, I don't hate them, but I don't really care about them. I'll eat fresh sweet cherries every year while I can pick them locally but the ones that are shipped from other places aren't worth eating. I like apples, will eat a handful of grapes or melon, an occasional orange, I detest bananas. Raisins, dried cherries or cranberries are acceptable in muffins. I don't care for raw broccoli, except in that salad that Deanna posted, and I make it with half broccoli and half cauliflower. Other than that, I love vegetables, all vegetables. I don't eat tomatoes unless I can get them fresh and locally, but they're really a fruit anyway. Other than that I'll eat vegetables any time. Frozen, canned, fresh, dried, reconstituted, in soup, roasted, raw, whatever. I will say, however, that I want them either cooked or raw, none of that half cooked nonsense and I'm not a huge fan of the green salad. Give me a big plate full of collard greens, though, maybe with caramelized onions and some smoked pork hocks or a ham bone and I'm happy. Add some cornbread and put some whole kernel corn and chopped green chilies into the cornbread and I'm extra happy! My favorite supper is to take parsnips, sweet potaotes, beets, onions and nearly anything else I can find, cut them up, drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast 'em. A big roasting pan full will last me for a week's worth of lunches! I sneak vegetables into gnocchi and soup, into omelettes and sandwiches, into bread and pot pies and stew. I sneak them in because I love them and Ashley doesn't so much, but she'll eat them if they are "in" something else. Annie

carmen, you are right, my dozen fat red hens cost more to feed than I can ever get out of the eggs, so I just have enough for the family and don't try to sell any. Here in Michigan they could free range all winter and they'd both starve AND freeze. I put them inside for the winter, they still get the table scraps and scratch grains, there are no bugs or seeds to find anyway. They have constant access to an outdoor pen, wire on both top and bottom to keep the neighbor's dogs, the local coyotes, skunks, raccoons and whatever else out. I give them fresh water every day but they seem to prefer to just peck the snow. I did raise a couple dozen ducks, but by the time I bought the ducks, fed them for 10 weeks, bought fencing for their pen, tubs for their water so they could submerge their heads, etc., and a couple of bucks each to slaughter and clean, they cost about $9 a duck. They cost more than that at the local Evil Empire, but not much. And that's before you factor in my time.... People want cheap food and many (maybe even most) are not willing to pay extra for better food. Plus, in my area, a lot of people already raise their own, so they aren't going to buy it from me. Some things, like turkeys, are cheaper to buy from the Amish than they are to raise myself! Annie

I should have posted my specs. This was done by an independent lab, before I decided to install a softener. The test performed by the Kinetico guy (using the colored water in a little bottle scale) was actually very close to the lab results. I was impressed. Hardness - 136 mg/L or around 8 gpg - I know that isn't that high, but white scale was killing me. Gone now! Manganese - 0.05 mg/L Iron - 0.06 mg/L TDS - Lab didn't do this, but Kinetico came up with 150 ppm Chlorine - not tested, well water Copper - not tested Alkalinity - 94 mg/L PH - 6.99 @ 19 degrees C No other minerals or bacteria were tested for. I wasn't concerned with bacteria as I've lived here for 31 years (we built the house) Kinetico installed a .05 micron whole house type filter BEFORE the 2030s WS. I had a really lame screen type WH filter before that didn't catch much. Finally, I agree that a re-test of my softened water might be interesting to see. I would like to be sure my PH is still OK, anyway. I think I've read a WS can lower PH by maybe a point max, which would put me below the minimum this lab recommended (6-5 - 8.5). They say PH below 6.5 is acidic enough to consider treatment. Concerning TDS, I don't know what is was, but I had TONS of black sediment stuff in my toilet tank before I put the .05 micron filter on. I think that stopped most of it, because now the filter & cartridge is LOADED with it when I change it every 2 months. Thanks for your thoughtful questions, justalurker.

I went on line and looked up'anosmis" and they mention smell but said nothing about taste.Do you think I still have hope? Ihad a stroke two months ago and I have been tasteless since.All I can taste is sweet and sourer

Ususally when you can't smell you can't taste either. I can only taste sweet and sour too.

Do you still have your sense of "smell"???

Has your doctor said anything about it coming back, since you had a stroke maybe it is just a matter of time and it will come back.

Do you have silver fillings in your teeth. If so they will release mercury and mercury will destroy nerve cells.

no d0ug I have false upper and lower.I had a stroke .In just a few hours my life completely changed.I can walk good but real slow.The only great change was lost of taste.Only sweet and sour.

lost my very acute sense of smell after fall to back of skull/concussion (oddly, 'taste' ok!). Dr. had me try zinc & vit. B injections. For whatever reason, I now most of it has come back but not nearly as good as before. I believe 'taste' is the term for sweet,sour, bitter (& another that escapes me ... ? salty) on our tongue & I never lost that but yes, flavor which I think is a combination of taste & smell was lost for me during that time. Can you smell things ok yet though? We don't realize how precious these things are until we lose them!
