For those of you with frequent lower back pain (lumbar area), what pain relievers (otc or rx) and/or muscle relaxants have you found work best?

Exercise to strengthen the abdominal muscles will often minimize lower back pain.

For the occasional "over-use" sort of pain, I rub a sports creme (Ben-Gay, Theragesic, or other smelly stuff) on it.

I'm already routinely doing exercise that's designed to flex or strength muscles in that area, and am currently looking into physical therapy. But I will probably need meds as well.

I already use Icy Hot or the equivalent, as well as a rotation of pain pills (Motrin 600 or Vicodin when it really hurts, regular Tylenol, Advil, or aspirin when it's less bad). Also use Skelaxin for a muscle relaxant. I avoid Naproxen because it upsets my stomach, even when taken with food and water. At first, I found Vicodin to work by far the best, but an unfortunate attribute of that medication is that it becomes less effective the more you use it. So that's why I try to rotate amongst pain relievers and not routinely use the same one.... and find something else that may work as well. Your body gets used to being hit with the same drug repeatedly and and stops responding, at least for some medications.

tell her to try two leaves of gotu kola each day - just chew and then swallow. I broke my back in 1978 playing rugby union but the break wasn't found by my specialist until 2002. For all that time I was treated for soft tissue injury and was lucky to survive the chirporactory, the manipulation, the massages, the stretching. In all that time I relied on pretty strong painkillers to help me through the day. Because of the break and because I couldn't exercise properly I now have spurs growing on most of my lower verterbrae. Two weeks ago I finally found some gotu kola plants at a local fruit and veg shop. I planted the gotu kola and gave it a week to set its roots. Then I tried the two leaves a day for four days. The relief was almost instantaneous. To test the experiment I went off the gotu kola and my pain and stiffness returned as did the need for pain killers. That lasted four days. This evening I chewed two gotu kola leaves (Centella asiatica)and the pain and stiffness was gone within twenty minutes. I'm a convert and if worse comes to worst all you've done is waste a couple of dollars on another garden plant. try it. and let everyone know if it worked for your mum.

I've found the most interesting discussions in that right side bar under Recent Posts! Sure hope your daughter is coping with the pain, John, and will be improving very soon. As to pain meds: earlier in June of this year (2014) I had miniscus surgery on my right knee and have been dealing with the pain of that recovery. The knee (and the pain) are doing better, but I'm not back to 100% yet - or even 85 to 90%. I took Tramadol for a while for pain before the surgery until the night I had little twinkly lights running around on the bedroom ceiling - my first (and I hope my only) hallucination. Then I was perscribed hydrocodone acetominophen after the surgery June 10. Now I want to try to get off that and the doc said to take Tylenol or call him for another prescription of the hydrox-aceto. I'm such an anti-pill person you would not believe, but I've had to come to terms with meds to get through the past six months. I just talked to our nurse practitioner here at our office and will try getting off the hydrox-aceto by taking one in the morning and 2 extra strength Tylenol at night and see if that manages the pain while I continue to recover. lee676, What I am about to tell you is going to sound a little unconventional, but because your experiences and symptoms are almost identical to mine, I would be very interested in talking to you directly. From what youve written here so far, I am almost certain your problems are much less associated with the serious mental illnesses you describe than you think. I too struggled mightily with irregular sleeping patterns, opiate dependency, ADD, back pain Â the whole gamut. Every one of the problems youÂve described is related. I do believe you have a touch of an anxiety disorder, combined with a tremendous amount of repressed stress. The memory loss is almost certainly a byproduct of continued opiate use. Find yourself a doctor to prescribe "Subutex" or "Suboxone", and get off of that stuff as soon as you are able. It ainÂt easy, I know it Â but these medications will elminate the physical withdrawal symptoms. The best way to rid yourself of anxiety (you will certainly sleep better when you do) is through education. All of the therapy in the world will get you nowhere unless you learn all about the physiology behind the disorder, why it happens, what is actually happening to your body, and the toughest one Â why. I was able to overcome a severe panic disorder with these tools alone, and able to rid myself of back pain forever through the work of Dr. John Sarno. He has written several books on the subject, with the latest titled "The Divided Mind". IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS BOOK. You have nothing to lose but $12 on Amazon or Half.com. It will change your life, and you will see yourself on every page. I too had a zillion half-finished projects Â everything you described. It is all attributed to repressed stress. Once you learn to "think psychologically" and discover all of the reasons your mind is causing these problems, you will be able to quickly rid yourself of nearly all of your symptoms. I am not affiliated with this doctor in any way; I am just one of the thousands of patients that have benefited from his work. It is written in laymans terms, and you donÂt need a psychology degree to apply his theories. Reducing sugar, nicotine (all stimulants), improving your diet and exercising regularly are of course all-important pieces to the puzzle. Your mind cannot be healthy without the rest of your body in balance. The interesting part you will discover, if you read his book, is that the mind plays tricks on your body Â when there are particular experiences your subconscious mind does not want to deal with, it will use a "triggerÂ, and take a past injury or malady that can mask the new physical symptoms that develop. Why is it that we accept life-long back injuries, but expect a broken arm to heal up, good as new? The back-pain industry is HUGE Â and has become almost fashionable. Your pain and psychological symptoms are very real; but they are rooted in the psychological. Investigate this Â you will find the solution. If the back pain/spasms continues with any regularity, I wanted to put in 2c on going to the doctor and making them pay attention to the problem. I say making because doctors don't like back pain. A lot of the time it does resolve on its own, and if it doesn't there aren't a lot of great options, though there are some. After years of periodic pain (not spasms like you describe) hurting for a month or three then it going away for a while, I went through another long stretch of pain that was seemingly endless. I'd had enough, and I went to the doctor and refused to take the "if it is still bothering you in X weeks call back" or "Here have a few pain pills", and insisted we do something. It turns out I have a degenerated disc (arthritis) in my spine ... I eventually found a decent physical therapist, and I have exercises that I do several times a week to keep pain at bay, and I also have some "good" painkillers for when I've had enough. The sad thing is that I went through more than 10 years of extended pain episodes before finally getting help. Back pain is tough -- sometimes there isn't a real cure, but stabilization exercises, knowing your options, having access to good pain control can help. Knowing it is not all in my head helps a ton. There were many times when I wondered when I was in my 20s and early 30s why I was having pain like that -- if I was just a whiner or if there was something actually wrong. Jean Marie

I think you are correct in suggesting that changing drugs from time to time might be a good idea.

I agree with the above poster. I change OTC pain releivers
from time to time. I have arthritis in my lower back.
I have had acupuncture, which helps, but is very expensive
and insurance or Medicare doesn't cover it. However, it
is deductible on taxes.

I agree with Lazygardens. Excercise to strengthen your back muscles. Works better than any OTC drugs I have found.

I lighten my wallet - by having a massage. I also exercise and see a chiropracter. It's tough to find even semi-permanent relief. I think I am going to give up walking for exercise. I know it is good for my bones and overall health, but it is tearing up my hips. I didn't know just how responsible walking was for all the pain I have been in until rain kept me indoors for a couple of weeks. I still swim and do aerobics. I don't know why aerobics is easier on my hips than walking.

Try good old fashion Epsom salts(I think I spelled it right)I had leg pains and nothing helped. Doctor took ex rays and found nothing wrong.Still hurt.so in the back of my mined I remembered that old remedy .Tried it last night and got up this morning pain free.Thankyou God

Since they took Vioxx off the market, I now use Arthrotec. I only take it when I feel that my back is starting to be stiff or a feeling that if I don't do something at that time, I won't be able to get out of bed in the morning. I also take 1/2 muscle relaxer at the same time. If I take more than that amount, I'm not able get rid of the groggy feeling for much more than a night's sleep.

I realized this week that for the first time in about 15 years, I haven't had a lower back attack in over a year. Before now, I had an attack about twice a year. Maybe the arthrotec works better than Vioxx did.

So, I've learned to pre-medicate as needed, which hasn't been too often.

Has anyone tried inversion boots, I hang upside down for 10 minutes in my garage when it gets real bad, seems to help.
