I still miss you, Daddy

It was 13 years ago today. I wandered aimlessly around the store, trying to think of your Christmas gift. I came home with nothing. When the call came of your passing, I knew why. I was thinking of you the moment you left this earth. I miss you every holiday, every birthday. I still can hear you telling me "There's no such thing as too much garlic" as we fussed over the holiday roast. I want you to know, Dad, than I "clean as I go" while I cook, now. I'm still a messy cook, but I still hear you telling me to clean as I go. I still see your scrunched up smile, delighting in whatever bite you took, every hug you gave, and every kiss you stole. I still miss you so much, Daddy. I hope we really are united on "the other side" someday. I love you.

For me it was almost 4 years ago for my daddy, and only January of this year for my mom.
I'm really depressed right now.
My dad used to be a cook on a ship on lake Michigan when he was in his early 20's. That's where he learned to cook. It's so funny you clean up as you go when you cook, cause he did, too.
Dad's specialties were turkey stuffing and the best damn sweet rolls ever!! He made sticky buns, sweet rolls with butter, sugar and orange peel inside and then the best orange icing on top!! Maple, nut, plain.....man.
This holiday season this year is especially hard....we always had Christmas at mom and dad's house, til they got too old and we'd host it. The smells....dad always wanted sweet pickles on the table? Have no idea why.
LAst year this time mom was in a nursing home. She went downhill so quickly. I am having an awful time. I just turned 50 on Monday the 14th. Didn't enjoy, even though with family.
Well, I'll get through, but my kids are worried. They have no idea how hard this is for me.
So, Gypsy, I get it...I do. It's nice to share w/someone who feels the same. And won't judge or criticize me and tell me to "get over it".

I'm too teared up to write just now. I lost my dad in 2000 and now my mom's going in for surgery on Friday at age 83 and I'm terrified of losing her. I'm 53 now, but I still feel like lost little kid. I'm an only child.

After reading your post about the 'sweet pickles'.....oh, it just brought back memories. The last year my Dad was alive, I had Xmas dinner at my house. When I asked him did he want anything special (he loved Smithfield ham, thinly sliced) he reponded with, "Yeah!! I want that celery with cream cheese, green olives, and those little SWEET GHERKINS."

Although that was always a 'staple' on my mom's holiday table, it seemed that meant the most to him. Funny how we remember the little things.

It was a little frustrating not being able to fully enjoy the daylilies, but I did get to fully enjoy my grandsons and that's even better--and they are even more gorgeous too! I was up in the morning before they were so I got to get out for a little while every day. Thanks for all the comments. I sometimes think I've gone overboard on the watermarks, but I love them and just can't resist. Many of these are quite new so I don't know yet about performance. It could be months before the investigators release a cause for the explosion, but the ammonium nitrate at the plant is notoriously volatile, so chances are this was just an accident. Could also be an accident caused by unsafe conditions as mentioned above.The Washington Post did give it front page coverage and more inside section A later. I suspect that the reason the bombing at the marathon gets more coverage is that it could so easily happen anywhere at any public event or in any public setting. The fertilizer plant, while terrible, was site-specific and not likely an outside attack. I don't think it means one state is getting preferential coverage. I certainly would prefer NOT to get that kind of coverage and I suspect those in Boston would agree. Years ago, there was an explosion at a fireworks factory. Awful, but there was an inherent danger just as there was in the plant in Texas.People are horrified by such tragedies, but people who work in those places realize they can be dangerous. I do think there should be a perimeter around such factories within which houses cannot be built, but again, many people would object to "Big Brother" deciding where they can or cannot live. I agree that regulation is a good thing and people forget what it was like when rivers caught on fire and food was not as safe as it is now, etc., etc. Pesky, just out of curiosity, I have never heard of regulators that weren't publicly funded-who funds you? If you don't want to say, no worries. You just mention it frequently and I really am just curious-it obviously isn't any of my business. I know of private places that monitor things-DH is on the board of one such environmental non-profit-but they have no regulatory authority. I think it would be great if they did!

You should have your mother make a new will. Estate and prbate laws change all the time.The most important thing you need to do is have her signh powers of attorny, especially for health care You said your brother lives far away so you are going to be the care taker weather he likes it or not. You need the power to handle anything that may come up. I will never understand why most parent make THE son executor. Just because they wear pants dosan't mean thay can walk on water. I lost my mother just a year ago and one of the greatist gift my parent ever gave me is the power and the knowlage of thier affairs to handle everything without having to bother my father those first few monts after the funeral. All the trust papers were in my posission, all the powers in place, they even had pre paid funeral arrangements. It has been the hardest year I have ever had but because of their caring for me they made it easier to deal with. I also have a brother and a sister who are lurking in the wings waiting for the final estate battle. My father was so conserned about this that he recorded the visits with the attorny naming me as the final word, we made copys and sent then to brother and sister and they have been rather nice to me since. I guess what I want to get across to you is to get everythong on the table now befor you need it.One thing that really helped me during my mothers last few months was the authorization papers she signed with all the doctors, medacare, insurance company so I could make phone calls and talk to her doctors. With the new privacy laws you really need them. I have them for my father now and it makes my life easier. Is your brother going to be there to take care of you mother?? Thanks, Ladies gadgets - I think he is doing ok in the new school. At first he was very upset, not by just changing school systems, but then about which school he would have to attend. But, he is making new friends. I'm not sure how he is doing about homework and such. He should be getting a report card soon and I'm assuming it will be an average of his grades from both schools. I haven't called him this week as I feel his mom thinks I'm being pushy, so I'll call over the weekend. peg - That must have been very hard to leave your foster brother behind even if it was the best thing for him. :( mammie - thanks for thinking of him. I am also hoping it works out. I'm now past the self-serving phase of wishing he would behave so badly his mom would send him back. *ouch*
