Roserobin, I orignally that that Roserobin was actually just your moniker on GW and that Cass was still you! Thanks for linking to the awesome photo though! I bet your Penny Lane was very beautiful anyway! Huttnem, technically, Penny Lane gets no sun because it is blocked by so many things, it is blocked by all of the tall companion plants, the trees, the house, the potted Frederick Mistral (which has become a very dense thick rose by the way); Penny Lane is blockaded by everything, and the only dappled sun it gets is if the breeze just happens to blow a little space between the leaves of the tree and the Freddie in front of it. At its current stature, Penny Lane is not getting any light whatsoever. If it ever rises to full height, climber proportion, it still is not going to get more sunlight because the canopies of my trees are very dense so very little light can reach the roses. Frederic Mistral is growing, but cannot bloom in this condition it seems. Frederic is luckier in that he can receive more dappled light, but this is no good for this kind of rose. If Freddie cannot bloom he will be swapped out to a different location and Distant Drums will go there. I have seen DD at Powell Gardens in very shady spots, so this will be another shade-tested rose in my garden if FM cannot bloom. I am actually looking forward to seeing if DD can be that other non-rated shade tolerant rose.... Anyway, Penny Lane also faces North-West so the house casts a very deep shadow on it. And my neighbor's big house is just 4' away, yikes!!! More shade cast on that rose. In the fall the sun direction again shifts and the "west side" technically gets far worse in terms of how much shadow the rose will receive. Even my East-facing roses in the backyard face this same issue when the sun shifts direction....and the fact that Penny Lane faces North as well is pretty scary! Poor rose! but wow, it's got so much spunk!

3 most common issues are A. CTEC explained it well. Bravo sir. B. A foam shower base with inadequate density spec was used. True story schluter has reworked their shower bases for just this reason. The old version had no spec for tiles smaller than 2x2 and even then they had issues. many foam pans still dont meet proper density for penny tiles and point loads. C. RARE but a pan even concrete built on say a slab on grade where the slab itself has Out of plane crack/movement. VERY rare theres also the rare chance a wood build structure has an structural issue.. Most likely installer error especially if A No show ! but who knows Hire wisely. Hire ONCE

This is a challenge with both penny and hex tiles on mesh, unfortunately. Not sure that having him redo it would get a hugely better product if he doesn't know how to mesh the pieces together. It's not grouted yet, right? That may help a bit if you're careful about your color choice. The wall at the back of the first photo where there are three distinct chunks of tile looks more concerning--is that intentional? And is that a shower curb or something else? I'd probably redo those before the floor. The subway tiles also look odd in the last photo, but hard to tell if that is the camera angle or if they're actually not flat. (On a side note, though--I love your sink!)

Showers require proper maintenance. MANY things can contribute to build up whether it's actually mold or mildew, or simply discoloration. While we have some opinions on this, we will limit our comments to what we believe are the most important considerations in your material selections and have not been discussed here. While marble has been used for centuries in wet areas, two primary considerations: The qualifications and experience of the installer (proper prep for a marble shower), and the quality of the marble product. OK, three: Your tolerance for proper maintenance. It appears you may be ordering your marble tile online? There is no country of origin noted (not where it ships from, but where it was mined). There is often a correlation between price and quality. Some of the lower priced marble we see today is mined in China (but perhaps shipped to another country for distribution, like Vietnam, etc.). We would not install your product before we inspected it. With decades of experience, we can tell quickly if this stone is appropriate for a shower. Some of these cheaper marbles are very porous, soft bodied (chaulky). They will literally crumble under our saws when we cut them. We can hold them up to light, knock on them, and use other methods to assess how soft or porous the material is. Further, ordering what should be a premium product online, comes with the other issues, like the variances in shade. All natural stone will have color/shade variance. The less expensive is likely to have even more. What will you do if your order arrives with extreme variances? Are you prepared for that? We would reject any product if we could not confirm it's suitablity and longevity for the application. That brings us to the quality and experience of your installer. Hopefully you have engaged them in your selection process and they have reviewed and personally handled the material and approved it. (Don't blame them down the road if they were not involved). If they have limited experience with marble shower installations or cannot answer your questions, you need to choose a different product or different installer. Either smaller mosaic pattern you're considering works and would offer the slip resistance needed. Grout has come a long way and the proper premium grout for the application will provide better stain resistance compared to years ago. Again, a qualified installer will know and use the best products. Start there. Our two cents and good luck with your project.
