The book has so many great recipes in it that it is well worth buying. Otherwise it all depends on what things you like to eat. We all have very different taste preferences and dietary habits so a recipe that one loves many others may hate. If you like fermenting things as we do then the book is worth having just for the 2nd chapter. If you like pickled meats and fish then it is worth buying the book just for chapter 10. Same for pickled fruits which IMO is better than any cucumber pickle could be. The zucchini relish and the corn relish are excellent IMO. So is Aunt Mary's Chili Sauce. We eat lots of relishes and chutneys in our house and all the fruit chutneys are good. But most people would never try them. If you are growing any melons in the garden then there are several good pickled melon recipes and it is the only way to preserve them. Some only like dill pickles, some only sweet and some wouldn't eat sauerkraut or kimchee if their life depended on it while we could eat it with most every meal. Some love the hot pepper recipes but we don't care for hot peppers for the most part. So if you can't buy the book then just pick the recipes you know you would eat regularly. Otherwise it is a waste of food, money, and time. Canning's goal is to preserve readily available foods when in season for eating when out of season. It shouldn't be about making things you have no idea if you'd like or would eat just to be making them. So pick a couple that sound good to you, make a small batch of it for fresh eating and trying at meals. Then if they go over well you can make big batch and can it. Dave

I was very lucky, when I started I had a friend who didn't have time for glass any more, so she loaned me her tools, including an older grinder but still very functional. So I could take my time getting my own stuff. DH got my grinder for Christmas one year...he still hasn't gottem me a saw though, maybe he doesn't love me anymore, maybe I should make an issue of it....hmmmm. If you are using glass in mosaics only, grozing pliers should work fine...however a grinder is really good to have. Grozing takes more patience than I have.

That IS a bargain! It's hard to beat F-R-E-E. I got two recently. One was Saturday when I went online to Penneys web site to order a set of dishes. It was a service for 12 that was regularly $199 -- and in the sale bill they were just $99. When I went online to order them, they were just $79! :-) Another was a bumper we had replaced on my truck recently. DH got estimates in the spring, and one body shop was nearly the same cost for a new one as to repair the hole in the old one (about $450). A few months later, DH calls the one and asks if the estimate is still good. Body shop says yes, so husband made appointment. We took the truck in. Body shop calls husband to tell him the truck is nearly done---and there was a mistake with the esimate. Bumper cost $1200 but they will "eat" part of their mistake and it will only cost us $900. When the dust settled, body shop stood by their estimate and we did, in fact, get a $1200 bumper for $450. We didn't know their estimate was wrong...just knew that for about the same price as fixing the old one, we could have a brand new one.
