My Mom

I just wanted you all to know that Mom left us at 10:52 yesterday morning. Her funeral is tomorrow at 10:00 and wake tonight. Thank you all for all the prayers.

Lulie, much sympathy. As hard as this is, I know you would not have wanted your mom to descend any deeper into Alzheimer's. She is truly free now. Let us know if any signs come to you.

Thank you for the kind words. Sarah, the little white flowers are annual paludosum daisies from seed. I'm already starting to tear them out as they succumb to age and mildew. I have not found anything to replace them with for the summer- I try to plant little white vincas, but they do not thrive here like the daisies. Renee

what they all said ... good work on using the phone ... etc ... but i dont know if your comment about them 'soaking it up' is realistic .... would welcome a discussion on such ... regardless.. i suspect you are never going to get over this .. lol .. so may as well chuck it all in.. just for piece of mind ... its not the first time a farmer lost a crop ... ken ps: sos must have GIANT slugs .. lol ... there must be an attractant in such.. so something was attracted ... wouldnt surprise me if it isnt some beer byproduct ... maybe used yeast??? .. who knows ...

This is an unfortunate but all-too-common situation. Many elders with dementia cause these kinds of problems for caregivers. And it can be worse; some caregivers can find themselves in legal trouble, being accused of/charged with elder abuse. It's a horrible situation in which to be. Your niece has been targeted by your mother; that is red flag behavior. Now if everyone in the family knows what is happening and agrees that your mother has dementia and that is what is causing her behavior, then the situation might not be a problem. But what if there is a relative, neighbor, friend who has his/her own personal agenda and would like your niece to find herself in trouble? A simple call to Social Services is all is takes. This kind of situation happens quite a lot, especially in very dysfunctional families. It sounds like I'm paranoid and perhaps I am, but I've read about too many instances of good people finding themselves in hot water, appearing before the court claiming their innocence, and having to hire criminal defense attorneys just to clear their name. And the ironic thing is that the people who make these accusations usually do nothing to find out the truth of the matter. They remain vocal critics but do nothing to get the caregiver's side of the story or to help provide any caregiving responsibilities. It seems that the more dysfunctional the family dynamic, the greater the likelihood that some legal mischief will occur. So be sure to protect your niece from any spurious accusations, even if they are from a relative with dementia. Look into consulting with a Geriatric Case Manager to find our the best possible solution to this situation. It will be well worth your time and investment to do so. God bless, Mary Ruff-King

Hello all... thanks for all the kind words. I am still trying to struggle through the day. Somedays I am ok, but others not that great. It was her birthday on October 20th. She would have been 64 or "39" as she would have said. We went to the park and fed the ducks... she always liked to do that. I also brought daisys and popped the tops off and placed them in the water. I miss the way that I would call her and she would be willing to go with me on what ever adventure I wanted to go on that day. She was always there for me. I know I am lucky to have a person like that and that it was my Mom, but it hurts no less. I am trying to build a new "normal". It is rough though because everything I do reminds me of her. I started to move around furniture in our house and I was thinking that everything I touched we bought together. She was a great decorator and I have no decorating sense at all. I just wonder when the feeling that I am completly lost and alone will go away. The holidays are coming and I hate it. I think we are going to plan a vacation at Christmas so I don't have to think about it. I don't know about Thanksgiving. Mom used to make the best mashed potatoes. This is so freaking hard. I think I am going to check into counseling again. It is so hard because I put on a strong face when I am out, but crumble when I get to my car or at home. I talk to my husband, but I don't think he really understands. What do you all do for the holidays?? Any ideas on how to get through them?

I'm so sorry for your loss Lu. I haven't been visiting here for a while. I've kept myself busy with my flowers, gardening and fish pond. My mom loved her flowers and I think of her when I'm working in them.

My deepest sympathies! I had lost my mother on May 30th of this year. Just days before you lost yours. Mine to a sudden massive heart attack.

Wishing you all the best in this very difficult time. I can truly feel for you as we are both grieving over our mothers.

Lulie, I'm so sorry that you have lost your dear mother. As you known, I lost my mom 3 months ago. You give so much to others on this forum. I wish you strength and peace, and comfort in the knowledge that your daughter and mother have each other now.

I have comfort in knowing my mother has her parents, grand parents, my grandparents from my dad's side and our 16-year old Pekingese. In a way I sort of envy her. :)
