Honoring my father (baby naming)

I am pregnant with my 2nd child, due in October. It will be the 1st grandchild that my father will not know (here on earth, at least). I don't know yet if it's a boy or girl, but I will find out in approximately 6 weeks. I probably shouldn't be worrying about this now, but I am.....

My Dad's name was Alan. If I have a girl, I would like to name her Alana. My mother is crazy in love with this name as well, and we both feel we couldn't choose any better a name in honoring my father. Problem is, my husband doesn't like the name. He's not for it at all.

If it's a boy, we'll pick a name that starts with "A", or just name Alan as the middle name. But that's not my concern. Don't ask me why, but I just have a HUGE feeling this baby is a girl. I know I shouldn't worry about it until I find out, but I'm a bit obsessed at this point (LOL).

Anyway,

Now I'm torn because I really want to give my child the best name to honor my Dad. I don't want to feel this kind of pressure, but I do.

My grandfather (Dad's Dad) passed away on the same day as my dad (same day, same year). Very ironic, I know... but that's another story for another time........ And I've decided I'm most likely NOT going to name for my Grandfather, which will no doubt cause controversy with my Grandmother. UGH!!

What should I do?

I know the baby is mine and my husbands, but I feel I need to please my mom, as well.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking, Stef. My first thought was Alice or Allie. I love the name Lainie. I know, I need to think some more.

What would happen if your son said, fine, dad, I'm all in favor of forgiveness & putting the past behind us; let's just get the business part of it out of the way first; you just pay mom what the court says you owe her & I'm your boy, okay? Your situation reminds me of something my old roommate Laurie told me: Her mom, Fran, divorced her dad & didn't take one cent in settlement; Fran had been a homemaker her whole adult life; she didn't have the funds to fight her ex in court, & she knew she couldn't help her daughters financially, so she agreed to waive her rights if Laurie's father would pay for college for both their daughters. Laurie talked to her dad at least once a week, & he knew she was paying for her college with loans & grants, & he never offered to help. There were weeks when she ate ramen noodles, & he never offered to help. Laurie's younger sister was living with their mother, Fran, in their home country, where Fran had returned to take care of her mother & to get a job with a relative. At that time, international phone bills were prohibitively expensive, so Laurie hardly ever got to talk to her mother. When the younger sister graduated from high school, she came to Texas & got in touch with Laurie, & Laurie helped her get a scholarship. About 6 months later, Fran came to Texas to visit her daughters; when she found out that the girls had had *no* help whatsoever, she blew a gasket & called their father. made no difference; The father claimed that he would have helped the girls if they had *needed* it, but that they were doing fine on thier own. so Fran got no settlement, her daughters got no help, & her ex kept all the money.

I have been down that cancer road several times, so I know how physically and emotionally exhausting it is. You have to do what you can live with long-term, and if you feel you couldn't live with yourself if you left your husband in these circumstances, then all you can do is minimize the wear-and-tear on yourself and your daughter. I am sorry your step-son is so impossible and even sorrier your husband is so difficult and unsupportive. Cancer didn't suddenly make him a better or different person. Here are my suggestions: 1) Protect yourself and your daughter financially for the possible time when your husband is no longer with you. You may want to set up a separate bank account and sequester some of your resources so you are assured of access to monies regardless of anything your husband might do (like decide suddenly to put his sons' names on the account). If possible, consult with an attorney regarding estate planning. Given your husband's current intractability, you may not have any luck securing his cooperation. But at least you will know what your legal rights are. 2) Prioritize your tasks. Your husband's medical care is a priority. Your daughter's physical and emotional needs are priorities. Doing your step-son's laundry, picking up after him or fixing meals are not. At 14 he can do those things for himself. If he doesn't do them, his problem. 3) Look into support systems for yourself and your husband. That would include hospital services, family support groups and Hospice, so that if the burdens get too heavy to carry alone you know who to go to. Do these things while you're still capable of thinking clearly. A time may come when you're too tired to think at all. This assumes you decide to stick it out. You may decide this is too thankless a task and leave your husband and his rotten kids to their own devices. Feel right in your choice and the judgements of others won't matter.

I agree with the others. Why would your aunt want to put a barrier between father and son? That would be simply cruel. If your aunt feels guilty, tell her to confide in a minister or counselor and NOBODY ELSE. Telling her husband would only cause him pain. The guilt is the price of her action and she must deal with it herself, not inflict it on others.

Sorry, yes, LeAudra is my niece, my brother's child. I've never had children; she was the first of all the nieces and nephews and has always been "my special baby." Of course, now that's there's 12 of them, all the neieces and nephews are "my special babies," but she's my special first-born girl, just as Christopher is my special first-born boy. I'm very fortunate that her mother, my SIL, has always "shared" and let her visit whenever I wanted. She spent most of every summer, from age one until she was 16, with me.

As I have been lying in bed listening to my DH snore and thinking about what else I could come up with, I thought of an idea. I decided to go ahead and sneak out of the bed to come to tell you. LOL I know that you probably want to keep it looking and sounding like Alan as much as possible, but I thought about maybe you would consider just changing around the letters in Alan and naming her Lana. I love that too. Okay, I'll go back to bed now. LOL

Okay, I know it is late, BUT. I just realized that Lana is so much like Alana. LOL! Sorry. Thought I had a good idea. Guess the snoring got to me. Now, I've got to go sneak back in bed before he misses me and comes to look for me.

My eyes lit up when I read 'Lana'. I love it. Until you wrote that it's just like 'Alana', I didn't realize it either! I guess we're both off in la-la land!! :)

Of course I like Alisande. :-)

I wanted to name my first daughter Alison, after my grandmother, but my husband didn't like it. We ended up naming her Suzanne, a variation on my name, and somewhere along the way I came to realize that while bestowing a name in honor of someone else is a very nice thing to do, at some point the name becomes the child's and detaches from the namesake. This is a good thing, really, but it begs the question of how important it should be to name a baby after someone. If it feels good to everyone, that's wonderful. But if it doesn't, honoring can take other forms.

I love the name Alana, too. But I'm glad you're taking your husband's feelings into consideration on this.

Before I read down as to what your girl's name suggestion could be, I thought like the others, and said Alana. Then I was blown away when you said Alana! What is your husband's first name? When I was still carrying my son that was stillborn, I was going to name him Justin, then when I learned he had died in utero, I just couldn't name him that, and so we named him after his father. But when I had my daughter the following year, I named her Erica Justine. I never gave it a thought, but months later it occured to me that Justine was the femine "version" I guess you'd say, of Justin. I have no other children, but I feel a part of Erica's brother lives on with her. Good luck with your pregnancy, and let us know what you decide. Carrying on a name in some form is a living memorial to those no longer with us.

I know that you feel the need to honor those that have passed on, but it is your child and you should be able to name him/her whatever you want without any pressure from anyone else and without any guilt.
