preparing for a loss

dear forum, I come to all of you today in search of support and guidence.

I work at a childrens hospital, I have become very close to a particular family, this is their second round of hospitalization and it is not good. they will go home on hopice care and wait for lana's final days, she will be on a respirator which they have decided to keep on her untill i get back from my vaction wich will be about a week long...they are wating so that i can make it to her funeral. I see that i have made just as big an impact on them as they have on me and iam flattred, i just need help i want to be their for them 100% but i dont know what to say ...if any thing at all ...its hard to visit with them becouse of their sorrow, I to am a mess i want to find the ban-aid that will fix it but its not out here. i just wanted sound advice form parents on what is helpful and what is not. I love this family so much i just want to be their for them.

How wonderful for this family to have your loving support at a very sad and difficult time.

I have not had experience with this to give you specific advice, but it is troubling to know you are going on vacation when the family is in such distress. Is there any possibility you could skip the vacation and be with them instead?

Like Socks said above, it IS a wonderful thing for you to share your sorrow along with the family...I have been in this type of situation as a healthcare worker for many years, so I know just where you're coming from.
I think you have just answered your own question, regarding finding a band-aid. Your just being there, is a remarkable thing, which is priceless. I know we are all supposed to NOT have any emotional attatchment or show our innermost feelings, but dang it, sometimes you just can't help but care! My answer to anyone who ever questioned my "attatchment" to a certain patient or resident, will always be "excuse me, but I am only human".
If you cannot postpone your vacation, could you possibly exchange phone numbers or keep in contact with the family while you are gone away? Been in just that situation as well, and it worked well when I had to leave town for a few days. Let us know how it goes, and bless you for caring.

Maggie, The kids are adorable. What cute poses! Have you recovered from Sandy? Your town sounds like it was hammered. Our library is built up on a good sized hill and is still standing. The town square was flooded badly. The post office and fire departments suffered damage but will recover. Our famous bascule bridge was opened during the storm and came through in better shape than we had a right to expect. So, all in all, our public infrastructure is wet, battered, but still in operation. Every week it seems we have one fewer "Closed Due To Storm Damage" sign around town. Progress is slow but is happening. A few downtown businesses are gone for good though. You are so right about the volunteers, agencies, faith based groups. We met people from all over the country here to help. Even Hawaii. Most of the FEMA people were retired and FEMA calls them to service during times of disaster. They are well seasoned in disasters and their calming influence was much needed. I was very impressed with how well all the volunteer groups buoyed the kids' spirits. They were scared and Mom/Dad were busy and preoccupied but it seemed like somebody was always quick to spot need and offer support, a Kleenex, or miraculously show up with a teddy bear. It does make you proud to be an American. I was also proud that there was no looting in our area so officials could concentrate their efforts elsewhere. Thanks for checking in. Hi Juelle and Kathy, My step-father wanted me to clear Mom's closets and drawers and if there was anything I wanted, I could have, and pass the other things on. I cried just sitting in her closet, remembering her in her everyday clothes, and dressed up for Mother's Day, etc. In her her jewellery, I came across 2 brushed nickel hearts, one engraved with my name, and one with my niece (her only granddaughter). They were obviously meant for us for Christmas, they still had the little store sticker thing on. That sure set me off. Memories, things, dates, times of season.....so many things trigger memories of our Mom. I can find something every single day to bring tears to my eyes. I miss her so much, too. One of the "funnier" moments was when DH and I were at Bulk Barn. Every few weeks they have a $3 off coupon when you buy $10 so it's nice to take advantage of it. In the past I would stock up on brown sugar, oatmeal, etc etc for both of us. The last time, I bought what I wanted and I was short the $10. So I ran and bought some more yeast (even though I didn't need it) to get to the $10 mark. In the car, I wondered out loud why it was hard to get to the $10, and DH said, because we weren't buying for Mom at the same time. Duh. Sob. It will be a year on August 1.

I always do 2 things. First spray all foliage (after pruning if required) with an anti-transpirant like Envy or StressGuard. Perform follow-up applications as per instructions. Second apply a root initiation stimulant like Formula 20 or PlantStarter, and again follow-up with repeat applications. Transplanting involves walking a difficult line between over-watering and under-watering. Remember that the roots have been damaged and are therefore unable to perform their usual function of water uptake for the plant. Apply too much and you will rot the residual roots. You are trying to encourage immediate and maximal root replacement. If the rootzone is continuously saturated it will become anaerobic, cellular growth will halt, and say farewell to any roots. Apply too little and you will hasten the process of dessication. That's why an anti-transpirant buys a little fudge factor into the equation. Definitely no fertiliser! This will create a zone of higher salt concentration around the root tips then there is in the roots themselves. Water will then diffuse from the roots into the surrounding medium in an attempt to balance the concentration. Yes, the plant will need nutrition to recover, but this comes after root initiation. For example, if I transplant during winter I cautiously fertilise in early October.

It is not easy to lose a parent, especially one that has been so involved in your life. What wonderful memories! Like you, both of my parents died under the care of Hospice. I am an only child, so I was the official "caregiver" in charge. My mom's passing was very quick, having been on Hospice only 4 days. Her illness was lengthy and horrendous so it was a blessing. I went to give her her 2 am morphine and she was gone. I was not there with her nor did I want to be. I did not think I could stand to see her pass. My dad was on Hospice for several months, which meant we bonded with the Hospice team. The chaplin, social worker, nurses and his daily care aide were all wonderful. I cherish the time we spent together, and even at the end when my DH and I were staying with him 24/7 we had many good times. I was giving him morphine and other drugs to keep him comfortable and was at his side, holding his had when he passed. It was beautiful. I never thought I could do it, but I have nothing but positive memories. I miss my parents every single day, but feel so blessed to have had them for so long. They were incredible parents, grandparents, etc. Our family cherishes the memories. I'm sending prayers to you and your family. May you find the inner strength that you need to get you through this time. You father is one very lucky man to have such a supportive family. It's time to let him go with dignity and in peace. How wonderful of them to have you there for support. I think that you have already said and done what is needed for them. It is a journey, and you have been there for them all along the way. All of this happening will help to prepare them for the days and hours ahead. One day at a time, one hour at a time. Just being there for them, telling them of your sorrow for there loss, pointing out the wonderful and beautiful things about their daughter, discussing heaven and seeing her again (if appropriate) and telling them what good parents they are. That is what I would want to hear if I were them. There is nothing you can really do at this point. But you have been there. They do not have to explain anything to you. You already know and you tolerate and understand their grief. That in itself is powerful. I think you should take your vacation and enjoy it, unless this will ruin it for you. Then postpone your vacation. Good luck to you.
