A difficult milestone

I'm hoping this post will push down that rude and stupid message about Chinese matchmaking.

My daughter Jill's best friend is pregnant. I'm thrilled for her, and bought a special gift that incorporates her love of horses, something she and Jill shared. So I'm looking forward to giving it to her, but I'm wondering how I'm going to get through the baby shower. It'll be impossible not to think of Jill, and how she should be there, and how she should be having her own babies.

It won't help that most of the people attending will be strangers to me. I do not want to draw attention to myself there, or cast a sad vibe over the festivities. Since I'm crying as I write this, I'm thinking maybe it would be smart to meet with the mother-to-be privately instead of attending the shower. What do you think?

Susan, I really understand your concern. You don't want to fall apart at the shower. You could explain to her your worry about being overly-emotional at the shower and ask if she would understand if you were not there. Tell her how much you love her and how happy you are for her, but your feelings about the loss of your daughter are just too close to the surface at this time. Maybe you could take her to a nice lunch instead. That would be fun for you both, and you'll be better at keeping the emotions under control. (And if you cry, she'll understand.) And you could give her your special present at that time.

If you want to participate in the shower in some way, you could take a bouquet of mixed spring flowers to the shower location the morning of the event. Just to show you care and wish her a happy day.

I'm so sorry you are suffering so much from the loss of your daughter. I love that name, Jill, and I love horses too. Take care.

...and thanks for the post to get that awful Chinese matchmaking thing bumped down!! Yuck.

Teresa, I'm so sorry to hear about your father, it's never easy no matter how old they are or how wonderful their life. You and your family will be in my prayers for strength and healing. Congratulations on the new baby in the family and on the house. I've always said that the only way to really clean a house is to move but it appears that having the entire thing repainted might be effective too! All those colors, though! Your questions: Is the 60th a big deal? Absolutely yes. How wonderful that you've been given the opportunity to celebrate a amazing milestone that few couples have the chance to reach. Please give your inlaws my sincere congrats on this amazing accomplishment. And I do feel so sad that you've apparently decided not to take advantage of this opportunity. The people you're hurting most by chosing not to go are yourself and your husband. How much of an explanation do you have to give? Normally, for most social situations, I'd agree that a polite, we cannot make it would be enough. However, something like one's parents' 60th anniversary is so monumental, so important, that not to go DOES deserve some explanation. However, I can also understand your reluctance to offer YOUR explanation since it basically comes down to 'it's inconvenient'. For a 60th anniversary? Most would move heaven and earth to be there, most would get up out of their sick bed, most would be glad to take a day off from the clean-up you've described, because PEOPLE are more important than THINGS. I'm sorry if you think my reply harsh, but surely, if your inlaws are celebrating their 60th, you must be in your 50s or 60s and you have enough life experience that you KNOW those of us who are appalled that you'd even consider skipping such a very important family event... are right. I know it's not what you asked (I did answer those questions), but please, for YOUR and YOUR HUSBAND'S sake, please reconsider your decision. Your inlaws will be hurt if you don't show--but they'll get over it because that's what parents do. You two will have years of guilt that you cannot get past, because there's no good reason for NOT going to this very special family event. I'm not being harsh, I'm being honest. And just the fact that you asked the question, in the way you did, shows me you're already aware of the guilt you're feeling over your decision. It's not going to get easier. And if you're embarrassed to tell family members the reasons behind your decision, you need to think about why that is.

You know, there are kids who do that -- Try something at an early age, do really well at it (considering their young age) -- then don't do it again until they're MUCH, MUCH more ready. My older son did that with walking, taking his first steps at 8.0 months, then stopping until 12 months, and with writing, writing his first letters at 2.5 (a whole series of 'letters', most of which were real!), then not again until age 5. For what it's worth, this is my son who is not autistic, not the one who is... A little advice? Try not to make too big a deal out of his successes. I think that feeds into his perfectionist tendencies and may actually exacerbate the problem - if that is what the problem is. Just give him a big smile, and maybe praise his accomplishment to another person within his hearing so he can tell you are proud but the focus (and pressure!) isn't on him. Do you have something to worry about? Hard to tell... Do you ever have the opportunity to watch your son play with other kids his own age? And how far behind is he? Could be, he's just developing in an unusual pattern. That all of the books and paper/pencil activity have strengthened some areas, but the relative lack of activity have left other areas less developed. Can you spend more time playing with him in non-paper areas? More physical games and such... What else did the tester say? And does your 'Mom gut' agree or disagree? Also, are you getting him speech therapy? (If not, do please get him a speech eval. and have his hearing tested.) Once his language develops, you'll have a lot more to go on.

Not to mention replacing the shear value, of the wall, affected by the wall removal, Not to mention re-establishing the weather-ability of the dwelling. "One interior wall was removed but I doubt a permit was needed for that as it was not load bearing." Hopefully the person who determined this, was not the same person that did not think that opening up an exterior load bearing wall might (Iffy) not require a permit. None of which is true. "No plumbing alterations are really needed as we are going with a similar layout to our old kitchen, just lines moved a couple of feet for the sink and fridge." You say "NO", however, all require permits. "The contractor has hired out for some subs - exterior masonry, flooring, electrical, door installation." All of which require a business license, insurance and permits. "Is your point that I should make sure that they have been paid since I am ultimately responsible?" NO! Do you have their names both personal and business? "he is trying to branch out to general contracting." So, do you even know if he's a licensed general contractor? "I am sure my state has a dept. of consumer affairs. If I decide to terminate the guy," Call them, before the meeting, and ask them the process of declaring abandonment for a contractor who has accomplished, non-permited and non-inspected, structural, elec. and plumbing alterations at your dwelling. "I need to escalate it to this point yet, or do I?" Depending upon the tempure of your discussion, he doesn't run to his truck and bring back cash, you might.

I was thinking about this even more, and since you won't know many people at the shower, some will be asking your connection to the mom-to-be, and it's just going to be so hard for you. You need to be good to yourself and not do things which will upset you. Maybe another day you'll be up to things like this, but now now.

That's a very good point. I never thought of that. I've been feeling relieved ever since I made the decision not to go.

Susan, I have had to deal with that one. Christin's best friend delivered a beautiful baby boy 6 months ago. My husband and I decided early on with this grief that if something causes us pain or that we were not comfortable with it, we would not do it. We explain if we have to and if people don't understand, we don't worry about it.
I was able to go to her baby shower in which many of Christin's friends attended. I also was also able to visit her in the hospital after the birth. When those events occured, it may have just happened to have been a good time for me. I don't know. There are many events in which my husband and I just haven't taken part in.
I think the main thing to preserve your feelings and the friends' feelings is to just be honest and tell them how painful it is, and let them know that when the time comes, if you feel that you can do it, you will. That way, all pressure and guilt is removed from you and feelings are not hurt, hopefully.
Another good friend of Christin's just got married and is having a party tonight. I will not be there because it is too close to Christin's heaven day which is this Wednesday. It would be a very hard evening for me. They understand completely.

susan, I agree with everyone here. There have been many occasions I have passed on these past 9 months for the simple fact that I dont want to ruin other peoples good time by my crying. I just explain to them why I am not attending and they all understand. I am positive your daughters friend will understand.
