Dad just passed away

My dad had a heart attack on Thursday January 22, 2015. He was on life support until Sunday January 25, 2015. We had to make the choice to take him off life support. We all got to say our goodbyes. Most of us stayed in the room until he was gone. He was only 64 and had just retired on December 30, 2014. He was never sick and this has been a shock. I feel so upset and mad at myself for letting life get in the way and not visiting him more. I should of made the time. I know it will take time but what if I never get over the pain?

I'm so sorry.

I don't think anybody ever really "gets over" a loss like this;
I think we just finally accept it, we get used to the pain, & eventually the sharpness of the pain gets blunted or dulled.

&, really, you don't want to "get over" your beloved father;
you want his memory to live on in your heart.

Please stop beating yourself up with what you didn't do.

These sudden heart attacks can be devastatingly unexpected.

A couple of years ago, our office celebrated our boss's 40th birthday.

Shortly after that, he moved away to take a better job.

He *loved* his new job, his new home, everything;
it was more money & less stress, & he'd found love as well.

He would post photos on facebook;
he looked good, happy, relaxed, just radiantly healthy & happy.

About 6 weeks ago, at the age of 42, he died in his sleep of a massive heart attack.

Your post just shines with the love you had for your dad;
celebrate that love.

Be patient with yourself,
concentrate on remembering the happy times,
write down your memories.

It helps to get outside & breathe fresh air & take some brisk walks or work in the flower beds;
oxygenated blood pumping into your brain is the best thing I know to lift the mood.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I want you to know how very much you have my deepest sympathy. I lost my step-father of 46 years on January 6, 2015. It is devastating and I still can't believe it happened. It was also a heart attack. Everyone got to say goodbye except me since I live in another state. I feel as though I should have been there because if I had just bought a ticket and flew up there I could have been there but my mother kept saying don't come, we will need you later when he comes home after the surgery. All of this happened in just a matter of a few days anyway so there really wasn't a lot of time to get there. He had the heart attack on December 30 and passed away on January 6 during open heart surgery. He was 78 which doesn't seem old today but certainly much older than your sweet dad. My stepfather was so full of life, everyone loved him, his funeral was attended by hundreds of people lined up past the front doors. He was taking good care of my mother who has a number of ailments. He was worn out maybe from all of it. My mother was struck with a rare disease 6 months before he died. She was in a lot of pain and taking all sorts of medicines. It made her a difficult person. I was so sorry to see it since she wasn't like that before. He was her primary caregiver. I also feel very sorry for my mother who on top of her health issues, then loses her husband. She is doing better now and a new treatment has put her in remission thank the Lord. We are all cherishing our time with her now. …. My own father died when I was very young and my stepfather had been there for most all of my life. It's a loss as great as losing my father.

I know what you are going through and it hurts. From losing my own father when I was young I can tell you that not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Though you never get over it exactly, you do learn to live with it and life does go on. My stepfather's death was so shocking and brought back all the painful loss of my real father. I miss my stepfather so much and am still in disbelief and so very sad that I didn't get to see him one last time before he left this earth. I can so relate to your feelings and please know you are not alone. There are so many of us at our age losing our parents and siblings. It is not easy and takes time to heal. Allow yourself time to grieve.

I hope you won't feel bad for not seeing your father enough (as you mentioned) it's not going to help to make yourself feel so terrible when you are already grieving. Just try to remember the good times, it's what he would want. If you can, be there for your mom as much as is possible. She needs you now and it would make your dad happy to know you are stepping in for him. Good luck and take good care and cry as much as you want to.

How shocking and tragic to lose your dear father so suddenly. It seems so wrong. I know how hard it is just to type the title of your posting. Both my parents have been gone for several years now, but I think of them often--my mother mostly almost every day. You'll always miss your dad, but the pain and confusion you are experiencing now will lessen gradually. It's good to have family members to support each other. Heartfelt condolences. I'm so sorry. I won't say i know your pain, because i don't, but i have also lost my father suddenly. two weeks ago today i found him in his truck. The medical examiner said it was a massive heart attack. I never and i don't think he knew either that anything was wrong. I love my dad so much! He was the greatest dad ever. He taught me how to fish, hunt, play golf, and anything else i wanted to learn. When i grew up (i'm 34), he was still my favority fishing buddy and golf partner. I can't tell you all the good my dad did for our community. I was so proud of who my dad was, and would brag about him to my friends all the time. he was a great man. Now i can't even think of fishing again, or playing golf. I know he would tell me to go and have fun, but i don't want to. I just want my dad back. I feel cheated. I should have been there, my dad should have never been alone when he went. It probably wouldn't have mattered, but at least ... i maybe could have comforted him in some way. I hope that he wasn't scared or hurting badly. God, why? the weekend before he left us, we were suppose to go fishing, but it poured down the rain. my question is if God knew he was going to take my dad, why couldn't i have that last trip. i know that's selfish, but that's how i feel. I miss him so much. I still need him. Just the other day i said to myself, "dad would know what to do here" and started to call his cell phone, only to realize that it was on the table beside of me. I am so sorry for your loss. Its a little crazy to say those words to you because I thought I would flip out as people said that to me at the funeral home on the night of my Dad's viewing. People kept saying I am sorry for your loss... I finally said to someone, for Gods sake he isnt lost he's dead!I did quiet a bit of flipping out in the first few months after he died. It was sudden even though he was dying of lung cancer. One morning he woke up early as always and told my sister he wanted eggs for breakfast and she helped him get on the potty chair and then went to start his breakfast, she popped her head back in the living room a few seconds later to see if he was done on the potty and he was dead. His heart just stopped. I still talk to my Dad. I look at his pictures and I pour my heart out just like if he was in the room with me. I have a deep and abiding faith that there is an after life, that there is a spirit world where we are reunited with our loved ones. I was on chemo therapy when he died. I also was in college. I took a week off at first and since we were past spring break I did my best to finish up the semester. I only dropped one class. I wish I had not dropped the class. I tried to go back the next semester but even with a very light load it was emotionally too much. Its been two years since he died. I am planning to return to school in january 2010. You are not 'the man of the house'. You may be the only male or the oldest male but your Dad was the man of the house and its just too much preasure to on you. Be a great big brother to your sister, allow yourself to feel what you really feel. Let her see your grief when it comes. Remember the good times together and tell 'Dad' stories. Laugh as much as you can. My sister moved in with my Momma after Dad passed. She would rent really funny movies to show Momma. My Mom's favorite movie was 'white chicks'. Isn't that a hoot? This dignified (almost) 77 year old woman getting histerical over white chicks? It still cracks me up to remember it. Do things to celebrate his life. Plant a tree, or donate a bench to a park in his name. There are lots of things you can do on very little money to remember him. I planted a 'forgivness garden' right after we found out he was dying of cancer. I was told this by a friend from church: "Never forget that your Father is with his Father in heaven now. He is surronded my loving relatives who have waited a long time for his return." Your Dad is too. Hey, maybe they even know each other??? Try a grief support group. I still go to one sponcered by the hospice that took care of my both of my parents. God bless you, you will survive this. I promise. They lived next door. My Mom and my brother still do. My Dad was surrounded by the people he loved and who loved him. It hasn't been as tough on me as I thought it would be. This is something I have been very afraid of for many years. But I'm handling it well, and my Mom is doing real good. That might change after all the family has left. But for now I'll take the peace of knowing he is finally resting. I would like to thank everyone here for the kind words and the thoughts and prayers. We really appreciate it. I need to spend more time over here instead of on Facebook. It just didn't feel right to post this on FB, but it did here. I try to come over here at least every couple of days. So even if I don't post and you don't see me, I'm still here. I appreciate each and every one of you. And I can post now without feeling like I need to cry. Pooh Bear
