Grandma/Grandpa never pick up the check?

| Whenever we go out to a restaurant as a family, my parents "wait" for someone else to get the check (me or my sister & families). There's nine of us total.
My parents are very comfortable. Money is not the issue. We generally go to nicer coffee shop places. My sister and I do ALL holiday entertaining in our homes.
When we go to a restaurant it's usually they who invite us! Shouldn't they pick up the check? |

| Nine people is a lot of people to pay for. If they invite you, they should pay, but why not go dutch, each family pays it's own. Or you could just wait them out! |

| i always felt that the one who invited paid. but that might not always be the case. ask for separate checks when your order is taken, that way it is clear what you intend to pay for. trin |

| As a senior, and grandm our family usually takes turns, but many times grandpa will pay, because we choose to. In your case, let them know ahead of time, that each family will pay their own way and if they ask why??? TELL them, that you feel they should at least pay part of the time. |

| We usually pay, our kids usually offer, but it's something we are able to do and enjoy treating them. Lynn |

| Phew - what a change - our children - all much better off then we are, retired and on v.limited pensions) occasionally offer to treat us but more often it's the other way around. We have helped them trmendously, financially, practically, and with all our grandchildren - they all seem unable to even say thankyou for Christmas and Birthday presents. |

| library mom The absence of communicating causes uncertain outcomes and sometimes stress/anxiety. It's interesting how tradition creeps into our lives. Obviously, your parents believe that their children should pay the tab, even if going out was their idea. I hope you don't let your parents know how much you resent that. If you don't want to pay for their lunch or whatever, then don't accept their invitation. Wait until you feel like treating them and then invite them out. You didn't mention if you were 'comfortable' enough to be treating your parents or having the holidays. If you aren't 'comfortable' enough and you aren't comfortable mentioning that fact--then I suppose you'll come up with some other excuse. If that is the case, then there is a larger issue that needs to be resolved. |
