Hi, I just found this forum

Hi everyone, I'm Gilda from Alabama and I just came across this forum. I am a new grandmother to a beautiful 2 month old boy, Luke. Luke's mom suffered from post partum depression the first 6 weeks and was hospitilized a while and I was the main caretaker for the little one while she was ill. Now she is doing fine, with meds and therapy and a lot of love and understanding. However, i am going through a little withdrawal, I'd guess you can call it.

Ashley's mom passed away 2 years ago and I am the only grand so I can use as much advice as I can get.

Hi, Gilda. Congratulations on the almost new grandson. They are sooooo much fun. Yes, it's hard when you cannot see them all the time, but the new moms & dads need to learn how to make their own mistakes, just like we did. Otherwise they'll never get the confidence they need to survive the teenage years. Luke is lucky to have such a loving grandma. Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas. Monica inTX

Welcome Gilda, and congratulations! From what it sounds like, you are not only a wonderful, loving, grandmom, but also a wonderful mom and mother-in-law. I know how you must feel about having withdrawals. I have two darling grandsons and after I have been around them, I miss them so much after not seeing them for just a few days. Just try to see Luke as often as possible without smothering Ashley and offer to babysit not only to help yourself, but also to allow her to get out some and keep her emotional state as it should be. You'll need to learn what spider mites look like. They are extreeeeemly small and very easy for the novice to overlook completely. Heck, they're easy for anyone to miss. I suggest that you purchase an inexpensive magnifying lens or 10X jeweler's loop (hand lens) for this purpose. No need to spend much money at all. Then, carefully inspect the underside of the leaves, which is where spider mites tend to hang out. They make webs, very fine looking structures, only when the populations get fairly high. Then, you can actually see the barely visible critters crawling from one place to the next. Would it be possible for you to take a good picture of the new leaf growth, and the underside of the leaves? We'd like to see.

Those are aphids....Green Peach Aphids to be exact. You can use a hose to spray them off (they will lose their mouth parts if attached) and you can scout and squish. That's all I do, but even if I don't the lady bugs and parasitic wasps will eventually come in :D Vera

editornj, like Dan said...go with what pleases you. I'm turning four of my 4x4 boxes into one long 4'x 22' box this year. By eliminating the 2' paths between them, I gain another 24 sf of planting area. Most of my boxes are made of used lumber from an old deck, so it's possible they will rot out early. I'm not going to worry about it...gardens grow without boxes around them, and rocks or blocks or whatever work just as well as wood. Personally, I think I'd love big rocks with a few plants that cascade and tumble down over the sides. I have rock walls around my Arizona cactus gardens, and they were quite easy to build. I took my first winter trip to the Catskills today hoping to see some eagles.I checked a couple of places I've seen them before. NOTHING. I drove route 10 from Deposit up several miles along the reservoir NOTHING. As I was driving back something caught my attention on the dam. I turned around and went back to check it out. On the dam there is a service road. Along the road are concrete post. To my surprise there were 10 eagles sitting on these post. 5 mature and 5 immature.
