gift for new grandparent

I will be delivering within a couple weeks, my first, and I would love to surprise my mother with a grandparent present at the hospital. This is very special for her as I am an only child and we are very close. Any suggestions from you veteran grandparents?

Do you have access to pictures of when you were born? If so, get a picture of the first time you mom held you after your birth and then take a picture of the first time your mom holds YOUR baby. Have the pictures made into 5 X 7"s and put into a side-by-side frane. Priceless! Get the frame ahead of time, get your baby picture with your mom and then take the picture of the new grandma. This gift can be done withing hours after the birth.
As for the hospital gift....you are already giving her the best gift in the world! Believe me, there is NO other gift like a grandchild. A big hug and a healthy birth is all your mom wants and prays for.

Believe me, having her first grandchild will be gift enough. Allow your mother to part of your child's life. Whatever material thing you might give her won't compare.

I cannot tell you what varieties do best in that area, but make sure you pick the correct trees. Some figs will sour, and split in the rainy, cooler climates, or not ripen properly. Do you figure that the ones who couldn't play down here will automatically just know how to do it in the Great Beyond? How can there be satisfaction without effort expended? I, too, am concerned about the dog situation. Perhaps I'm reading things that aren't there, but you said the dog was released from a pen--that sounds like it wasn't truly a 'house pet' kind of animal. Animals who spend a lot of time in pens often aren't as well socialized as those who spend all their time with the family and are much more likely to act aggressively. I'm sorry, but in a case like that, allowing the dog to run free around a 3-year-old when no one was apparently keeping an eye on the situation was a really, REALLY dangerous thing to do--the result was predictable. You also said that they sued your ins. to cover their medical bills and seemed to have a problem with with that--that's what you have insurance for. Why should the parents have footed the bill for damage your dog and your husband's carelessness caused? Your message seems to indicate that the little girl was pretty seriously hurt ('she's healed nicely' and the fact that their suit was apparently successful seem to indicate her wounds were fairly substantial). Actually, a dog bite is one of the easiest ways to get your home-owners cancelled--the companies consider that responsible pet owners have a duty to keep their pets under control, that bites are preventable. You seem to be blaming them for the cancellation--I don't know many young families today who can afford major medical bills, they probably did the only thing they could. You could, of course, prevented the claim, by offering to pay the bills yourself, right? Please consider how you would have felt years ago, if you thought someone caused harm and hurt to one of your children--you sound like you care about your children and would like to care about your gk--I imagine you'd have been pretty upset if someone else hurt one of them. Can you put yourself in the parents shoes and imagine how they might feel? I feel very badly that you're not getting to see your granddaughter as much as you'd like, but I do agree with the above poster. Some counselling would certainly be in order--for all the family--so that you can work out the many issues that your family faces. Good thoughts to you, your husband and the rest of your family. I truly hope you find the help you need to work this all out.

So sweet, thanks for sharing. My kids only have one grandparent left, my Mom. But they love her fiercely. Any time my daughter would head down to Chicago for a show or a band thing in college, she would take a group of her band buddies and stay at Gram's house, where they would of course be fed with huge meals. Not too shabby for starving college students. My son and my niece are planning to spend spring break with Gramma next week. Gwen, my niece, is flying in from Colorado and Ted will be traveling down from Madison. How awesome is that that they would forgo the wild partying of spring break to spend it with their Gramma?

Don't forget, your Mom may not be the only grandparent. Don't single her out as if she's the only important one and leave out others if this applys.

my Daughter gave me a book called " Grandma's Special Memories" by Linda Spivey and I love that . Its a book that you write all about "you the "Grandma" in it has spaces for pictures and recipes , I just love it .
She got it in a Bob Evans her in palm Coast , Florida and she said it cost 15.00

I'm a new grandfather and my wife has taken a lot of family pictures over the years, many of which have been turned into paintings to hang in the home or office, or to give as gifts. I'm sure your mother would enjoy a painting made from a special photo that has a lot of meaning and memories for you both. Or wait until the grandchild is a month or two old and have a photo made that can become a painting. You are going to have enough on your mind delivering a baby. Don't complicate your life with trying to make anybody else happy, except your husband who has gone through this 9 months, and has months of little sleep ahead. As fatquarters pointed out she may not be the only grandparent. I suppose a book would be okay, but you may be only in the hospital overnight and lucky to get any sleep. Enjoy letting people send flowers and fuss over you.
