daughter pregnant at 39

Hi everyone

Just need to offload my anxieties for my 39 year old daughter who is pregnant for the first time after going through five ivf programmes - three in Scotland where we live, 1 in Spain and the last in Prague. The latest one has worked and she is now 8 weeks pregnant. She is so scared about hanging on to this pregnaqncy and has already had 3 scans done which all show a healthy embryo. I already have 3 grandchildren from my two sons with another one due in March who we both love dearly. My husband has major heart problems and I try to keep him fee from stress as much as possible. He is so thrilled with her pregnancy and I can only hope nothing goes wrong. We have all waited for this for so long and my husband and I have supported them mentally and financially during this time. Sorry to have gone on to much but I just need someone to confide in. I have to be strong for Caroline and in front of my husband and it is very hard at times.

What wonderful news. We wish her all the best throughout her pregnancy. The anxiety must be hard now, but every week is a blessing and, hopefully, soon enough, you can all start to relax.

You'll do fine, mothers always do, especially where their kids are concerned. I'm sure your daughter will do fine too, with such a caring mother.

Thank you for your kind wishes. She had a slight spotting last night and managed to get an emergency appt. at the hospital this morning. As her husband couldn't get time off work I said I would go with her. Thankfully everything ok and baby still there. They say she could have this each month. I will be totally white haired by the time her due date comes. I have tried to tell her not to panic each time this happens, but ofcourse this is not easy. Roll on 7 months time.

Thanks - we haven't been on vacation for 3 yrs and dd is too young to remember. Christmas is going to be tight this year, so the WDW is the big gift for the kids (plus a birthday party - dd's first with school friends). It's hard having both of their bdays a month b4 Xmas anyway (and one is always Tgiving week). I really want to make this special for them - we even made reservations for a "princess lunch" while we were there (we could cancel that to save $$$, but since I've already told dd about it probably not good idea). DS is getting the short end of the stick this year since most of his friends can't come to the party, and we're not doing anything "special" like the princesses for him in WDW, but he's thrilled just to be going - he remembers 3 years ago and is looking forward to going on some of the new rides like Everest. I'm glad at least I'll be able to go with him - DH isn't much for roller coasters - I went on Space Mtn with ds last time (and he was a bit scared but wants to do it again now). I'm just going to make DH take him on Tower of Terror b/c I won't do that again - went on it b4 we had kids, never again! DD is also looking forward to going on some of the rides, even though she's still too small for many of them. My uncle has been complaining the past couple years about my aunt going through the change, you'd think DH would catch on that I'm not just being crabby all the time because of the move/trying to finish the house while we're living in it or dd's whining (though those don't help), that sometimes I just don't feel well (esp at night with night sweats, so I don't get much sleep). Hopefully the BCP (once I can get back on them) will not only make my periods lighter but maybe also act like HRT and alleviate some of the other symptoms of perimenopause? I didn't have night sweats until after I'd been off them a few months.

Thanks everyone for your advice. My comment about SD22 looking after our son on 2 nights in 5 years was to mention out how little time we have had as a couple. We have days together but next to no nights together. This is, I believe one of our problems in that we never were a couple. My partner initiated the relationship while she was still married so we went from a secret relationship to a family of five very quickly. My partner has had extensive family commitments with socialising teenage children. I had little involvement in this and I realise this has affected our relationship. I've never been able to relate to SD22, SS21 father was still on the scene, SS19 always had obscure interests (rollerblading, karate - not much interest for a spectator). I know these are excuses, but its the way it panned out. My partner had plans for her ex to have the children on alternate weekends. It was only occasional that all three went and the weekends my partner elected to have them were the weekends I wasn't working. This was so she could drive them around. This limited our time together. Unfortunately this has created resentment as I've mentioned above. When I raised this in previous counselling, in that I feel our relationship came second, the response has been as mentioned (competing responsibilities, feeling guilty with not spending more time with her children). Partner states we have Fridays together (we both have Friday off), when you take into account school drop-off / pick-up it's only half a day. I know this is family routine, but during counselling Fridays together seemed to be the only compromise. I saw a solicitor 1.5 weeks ago to discuss my options. He suggested one could get a property settlement agreement in case the situation becomes more pear-shaped. A bit like a pre-nup during the relationship. I would lose a lot but I would imagine I would lose more further down the track. If I suggest a property settlement agreement I would imagine this will be a turning point. She may decide to leave. I saw a psychologist 2 days ago to discuss the situation. Only the first visit. She felt the children haven't developed life skills to date. Obviously everything is from my perspective. SD22 is not the only dysfunctional family member. The youngest SK (SS19) - finished attending school, working casual in a supermarket (fired from previous supermarket job for stealing, bludged for 3 months after finishing school before he got this job), owes his father $2000 (car accident insurance excesses x 2), owes his mother $5000 (car accident insurance excess x 1, mother put in 2K extra for car, spent 3K on DJ equipment - part-time interest / job). It gets worse - lost his driver's licence (4 infringements) and blown the engine in his car ($2500 - 3000 repair - parents rightly refused to pay). You could accuse me of making this up, but its true. He also smokes (incl dope at times). Fortunately he spends half his time at a friend's house, so I'm able to tolerate his loud music / non-contributory lifestyle. My partner accuses me of only having negative comments about her children. I know this is true, I know they have positives, they are just overwhelmed. The only SK getting on with his life is SS21. Sometimes I think the only way I could be happy is if SD22 didn't live here. The trouble is I will be seen as cold and callus, and I doubt I would have a relationship with my partner. SD22 does have a father to return to. She was living with him 6 mths ago. SD22 doesn't seem to be working, isn't studying. The reasons she moved back here don't seem to apply now. I doubt our relationship would survive this ultimatum. I know I could tart it up as an option if she didn't contribute (which would seem likely) but it would be seen by my partner as a way of getting to live with her father. I agree a little with all of you. Yes this hit a nerve about the baby thing within me - - and I do think he is very male and didn't see the deeper issue with how to a woman this is a special, intimate thing that an ex should not be involved with even if it's in good fun. Maybe I take it more serious. But I do think he is still too entangled with the ex, she still hasn't learned to let up on asking his opinion about things and he still hasn't learned to set boundaries. He's gotten better but there's still a way to go. I told him how I felt about it after venting on this board and he said that he agreed with me. I told him that this baby has a father and the last thing this baby would want to find out it that his mothers ex was involved with his name! This is a biracial baby (father is black) and the mother wants to give him her last name which is Irish and I find it odd that everyone is pushing for an Irish first name as well when this baby will have many ethnicities to celebrate within his family. That's just my opinion and I am keeping to myself (and to ya'll). I know - it's not my call but it's the way I would handle it. My concern is now that she has asked about names I could very well see her asking him opinions on schools, etc in the future. My husband is very intelligent and a "leader" type so people often look to him for guidance, but in my opinion he is no longer her "pack" leader and the perks of having his opinion and advice in her life was over when the marriage was over. I explained this very point to him in the past when we argued about something else to do with her and he agreed at the time. But he doesn't realize when he's doing it! So frustrating.

I agree about throttling some of those dads! I missed the last part of the adoption show but a friend told me today that she gave birth to a girl and didn't give the baby up straight away as she planned. Sounds like it was sort of sad with the hand over. The one show that stands out in my mind was the one where the cheerleader was pregnant and didn't want the father to know. She lived with her parents and you could see that she was exhausted after the baby came home. I almost bawled when she asked her mom to help her a night or two and the mom refused, cause she helped her daughter during the day and needed her rest. The daughter clearly tried not to rely on her mom and I felt as if she genuinely needed a break at night. She was a really nice girl and mature for her age. I was happy when the grandparents bought her the car so that she could have some relief from her mother's control. I'm all for lessons learned, but I could see her side more clearly. Didn't realize that it was the finale because I've only watched a show or two and the shows seemed to be getting more interesting.

Congratulations! Such wonderful news! I had my last child about her age. It is so important to eat a good diet and get her rest. This long awaited baby will be wonderful!

Congratulations! Please try not to worry about the pregnancy. These days there are lots of women who have late babies. And it's not just these days either. My husband's mother was 44 when he was born and 46 when his brother was born and that was a long, long time ago.

We can't wait to hear news of a healthy birth!

Is there any support system for your daughter? I've always found self-help groups best. No 'professional' understands angst like someone who has been through it.

While we hope all goes well, would it take some pressure off to have a plan for the future, just in case? (More IVF; no more IVF; adoption; 'favorite aunt' role; volunteering with children; etc.)

I spent years trying to conceive, long before IVF was an option. It was ruining my life and my marriage until my husband and I decided to say no to any further medical procedures.

Once we made the decision to put the impossible (for us) dream behind us, we were able to refocus and move ahead. We mourned the never-to-be baby first, then considered our options. It was a great relief. We were able to adopt within a few years. We are proud and happy parents -- and grandparents now.

Hello Daisy62,

My daughter is 39 and also pregnant for the first time. I am also very concerned and hope that everything goes well. She has tried for a long time to get pregnant and finally was successful after seeing a fertility specialist. She is due June 8, 2009 so we have much in common with our daughters. Keep me posted as your daughter's pregnancy progresses and I will do the same for you. I will keep you in my prayers.

Thanks for all your kind support. Gayle610 - it is great to have someone else going through the same anxieties as myself. Caroline is due on June 14th so that will be around the same time as your daughter. She is now 10 weeks gone and thank goodness the past 2 weeks have been problem free. Her sickness has now stopped and she is feeling better apart from pains in her hip joints. She is 5ft 2ins and small made so this will be her pelvis loosening. She starts to reduce her hormone medication next week so that will be the worrying time. How is your daughter keeping.

Ah, good news here too. Our daughter is expecting her second child in the fall. She is in the very early stages and experiencing morning sickness for the first time--all day long. We hope that stops quickly. Her child is our only grandchild, so another will make for busy, happy times.

Hope all is going well with all the other mothers-to-be.
