Old Children's Book

I am trying to remember a title of a children's book (chapter book) that I read about 35 years ago (in the late 60's). It's probably a 2nd-5th grade reading level. I only remember a little bit about the book - and that there was a witch in it and she would mix potions using different color powders. I remember the descriptions vividly regarding the colors. She was a good witch I believe - it wasn't scary - just interesting and fascinating.

Thanks

JW

RE: Old Children's Book

I have a book called "Little Witch" By Anna Elizabeth Bennett. It was written in 1953. It is a story about a young witch named Minx who is a really nice girl with an evil, nasty witch mom. The mom goes out at night to do her "witch things" and leaves Minx at home to mix her brews using different colored powderes. Does this sound like the same story? I loved this book. I read it (this very one) in the second grade and just reread it to my kids during Halloween. Do you remember the mom turning the neighborhood kids into flower pots?

A little more...

I meant to say that the witch turned the kids into potted flowers, not flower pots. Minks was supposed to mix the witch's "black spell brew" but instead did her own mix of magic powders in hopes to conjure a fairy.

"She looked over all the jars of magic powders and liquids on the shelves. There were hundreds of them, all different colors. Almost every night when Madam Snikasnee went out, Minx worked on her experiment trying out a different powder each time. She was trying to make the right kind of magic to cause a fairy to appear."

Can you tell I really liked this book?

RE: Old Children's Book

Wow. I remember this book, danihoney -- I didn't read it until the 80's, though. I think the copy I read must have been my mother's. The story has stuck with me all these years, and I've always wanted to read it again, but couldn't remember the title! How nice and random that I came in here and read this thread :) Hopefully I can track down a copy on Ebay or something.

This was my all time favorite. I'm sure I read it four or five times and I was able to get a copy for my daughter several years ago. It's available new or used on Amazon. My favorite children's book...and I'm a librarian!!
