G-kids savings account

I tried to open a savings account today for my 11 year old Grandson.

My credit union, which I have been a member of for 13 years, said I could not do so without a guardians signature on the account. His Mother (my Daughter) died a few years back so that would leave his Father.

Well, there are trust issues. I can not trust that the Dad could leave that money alone and with him as the primary, he has complete access to it. Sad I can't trust him but true.

I find it very odd that I can't open an account with my grandson. The credit union even has a "Rags to Riches" plan just for young savers. I would have to open an account under my own name to put his money in, no newsletters for young savers, no "graduation" when he turns 13 (into a regular account for himself). No getting monthly statements in the mail showing how much he has saved and the interest earned.

Why the heck can't I open a simple savings account with my grandson to help him with a secure place to put his money and learn about saving and have it SECURE from all?
