2yr old Grandson is terrified to go to bed!

Has anybody any thoughts, as to how to help my 2yr old Grandson, overcome his fears.

It only started a week ago. His parents trying to put him to bed. and screams in complete terror.

When he came over last saturday to stay. We kept him up a little longer. with the hopes he would go straight to sleep. no, it didn't work. He just screamed, and a look of fear in his eyes.

Has anybody had this trouble with their Grandchildren?

This is my only Grandchild, and would love to be able to help him.

Something must have scared him, so everyone needs to go back to the night before this started and figure out what it was and then come up with a strategy to reassure him that he is safe and loved.

Was it a thunderstorm, a scary TV show, cartoon, movie or news program, a scolding, a bad dream, a big change at home? Whatever it was, he's connecting it with bedtime and being alone. Once you all figure it out, it, might not be too hard to fix.

I remember when my son was two (He'll be 40 in the fall!) I told him that one of our dogs went to sleep when indeed, she had been euthanized. He was terrified to go to sleep as well. I managed to talk to him and find out what had scared him, and then told him that the dog had died, not gone to sleep and then he was fine. So I concur that something must have scared him, and wish you the best in finding out what did.

i might wait to cut the left .... my 6 year old.. started from about the same size is easily 6 foot tall and 6 at the wide bottom .. GIVE IT A LOT OF ROOM ... make permanent planting.. perhaps even planting the root ball at an angle ... no way i will ever describe it in words.. but if you can get 20 to 30 to 40 degrees.. just by planting the roots crooked.. you will reduce the amount of training necessary ... all of the root ball needs to be under soil .... but by creating a very slight mound.... you may get 90% of where you need to be without a stake ... if you do that ... what you are thinking is the second leader ... will be nearly parallel to the ground ... go figure ... we will take care of that in a year or two ... if it continues to have upward ambitions .... staking is illustrated below .... i tend to size up.. as needed.. rather than pound the 7 foot stake in right away ... hoopsi isnt going to need staking for structure... for you.. it will only be for training ... and NEVER TIE OFF NEW GROWTH .... it will snap like a carrot ... always tie back to at least last years wood.. or even better.. 2 year old wood ... trust me.. i have snapped off more leader than i care to admit ... get it planted... on an angle... snap a new pic.. and we can advise at that point ... make sure the root/trunk collar is at soil height.. meaning properly planted ... you might be shocked.. but that is a very healthy.. very normal product .... FOR WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT ... ken example of staking.. but not a hoopsi

Hug's to both of you.......Your taking me way back into time with your daughters art work LOL. It could be a lot worse let me tell ya. My son who was quite the busy little boy went through a time of waking up in the middle of the night at the age of 3 yrs' old and he had woken me up with many sounds that did not sound right. I slept with the TV on (this was before the had a sleep timer) I was awaken to the sounds of snap, crackle and pop, he had poured a cup of water into the back of the TV. Other time I was awaken to the sounds of crunch.....crunch crunch........crunch crunch crunch.......when I opened my eyes I could see his shadow doing a dance in the middle of my bed room, getting up to see what was going on I found a whole bag of potato chips empty out on the floor and he was stomping on them. Then there was the time he had gotten out sugar, cool aid, cereal and who knows what else and grounded it into the carpet, never did get the cool aid out. Then there is my daughter she picked on cat's, she was only 3 yrs' old at the time but I was in the tub getting ready for my son's birthday party when all of a sudden my son burst into the bathroom yelling moma,moma, Julie, Julie she has the cat, well my daughter had the cat by the tail swing it around in a circle. Poor cat was never the same and would not go around the kid's at all and I had to find him a new home. I loved that cat he was so sweet and so pretty.....but I could not put him through the torture and to think that cat loved them kids he slept with them every night till DD got a hold of him.

Hey Lou! It's so funny you should just mention crossing the inferno strip! I just started playing in the inferno strip with some step stones like a couple hours ago deciding how I want it to look :). It's not really a huge deal to have a path. I'm on a tiny cul-de-sac with 4 other houses. Also, I always park both cars in the garage so everyone uses the driveway. I wouldn't put any plants with thorns or spikes that aren't set way back or potted. I have cactus in pots around baby trees to protect them from dogs. (No dogs will go the cactus btw.) Thorny roses would grab folk's clothes near a sidewalk. Those Maples sure aren't in any big ole hurry. I remember how pretty your maples were not too long ago. I'll bet they'll be spectacular one day. Maple leaves are great mulch for acid plants. The guy next door has a good sized Japanese garden with a water feature and it all in the front yard. I'll ask to take a picture of his gorgeous maple( a curvy Shantung that weeps a bit?). It also has a 8ft palm, a dwarf Pomegranate, and a lot of evergreen flowers and ground covers. It's really neat. He has privets 3/4 the way down for a hedge. You can see them in the last picture over to the left. Those privet are at least 10 ft from his house and lead to his back gate. If you squinsh your eyes really hard you can see his fig tree in front of them. It's small now but not for long! His inferno strip has a brick/step stone path and this very sad, half dead dwarf yaupon in it. Grass looks so crummy here it detracts from his garden. He's thinking about taking out the sod too. A few other houses in and around on other streets are getting in the act with a sidewalk garden. One house has Lirope(sp?) looks pretty nice. Another house has CMs that will look really good when they are bigger. The only other one I can remember has heavy mulch with amaryllis. You KNOW they recommend Trident Maples as sidewalk trees in Fort Worth right? LOL!

There are a few games out there for children that age. I bought a couple of them for my just turned 4 year old grandsons for Christmas. I bought them Uno Moo--a variation of the card game uno with animals. I also got them Yahtzee JR. again a variation of the origional aimed at 4 year olds. There is also one called Picture Domino's--played like regular domino's only you match pictures. I have bought them old maid cards with animals, which we played without the old maid and just dealt out 3 cards and turned over the rest on a pile one by one. When a card turned up that matched one in his hand he could put it with his and take another one off the pile. The winner has the most cards, but most times we didn't count the winners or losers. Just look around there is lots out there and what's saying you have to play the way they say. You can make up your own rules to suit playing with your youngster. Something else my grandsons like doing is putting together jig saw puzzles. You can start with 8 or 12 pieces and work your way up to however many pieces you want

Thank you momj47 for your reply, none of the things you mentioned seemed to apply.
Although he did go to creche, all day. Maybe something there had happened.It was a couple of weeks ago now, so I do not suppose they would remember now if anything had happened there.
But it is a thought. thanks again for that.

Thank you cocooner for your thoughts. You are right children can misconstrued what you say to them, so that is a tought too.

Leave a lite on for him, read to him during the day in his bed, tell him Grandma or Mom needs to lay down and rest and his bed is so soft and nice. Maybe happy times associated with his bed during the day will make the bed less fearful. My son went through a stage of being afraid of the dark. I put a 10 gallon aquarium in his room and used it as a night light. He watched the fish, when I felt the time was right I told him if the lights aren't turned off every once in awhile algae grows and the fish won't like it. Pretty soon he was telling me to turn it off. I never closed the doors in our house for ventilation reasons so there was always some light while we were up and our voices probably help him adjust.

It's certainly worth a try with reading in his bed during the day, seems like a good idea.
I shall try it with some toys too.
The fish sounds like a good idea too. he does love to look at fish.

I hope it works, he is so distressed still, and we have tried so many things, it's the shrill cry that is so upsetting. If you go to walk away.
