Whats in a name?

The day will soon arrive, probably in the next few years that I will be a TRUE grandparent, not one just to their dogs...I am desperately searching for names for my husband and I to be called by our grandchildren because we are not your typical grandparents. The names of Grandma-Grandpa, Grammy-Pops, Mamaw-Papaw, come on now. Can't we come up with something a little more contemporary? I absolutely adore children and mine in particular, and wanted to be lovingly named, but just can't reconcile with gram-gramps. My parents are Nan and Grandad, which suits them perfectly, so I can't use those, and I have searched foreign grandparents names, but still can't find something loving and yet fun and young. I would like to get it settled now so that when the grandkids do start, they will use the names I have chosen. I am not being selfish, I just don't want to be a regular GRANDMA. Can anyone relate? No offense to all of the grandmas out there. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Patusho, In Colorado we call it California Ice Plant, and I always wondered what the botanical name was, so I just looked it up--it's Carpobrotus edulis. Here's a link with more information about it. It is definitely good for hot dry places, though I don't think it can go without any watering at all. When I was commuting to SFO for a few years, I decided I wanted to try some in Denver, so I snipped a few pieces off in a parking lot, brought them home with me, let them dry for a couple days, and stuck them into soil where they rooted beautifully. They're nowhere near hardy enough to grow outside here, and they eventually got too big and awkward for a houseplant, so there gone now, but it was fun to experiment with them. What’s good name brand for outdoor wood stains?

Thanks for all the advise IF I stained it with a transparent stain Would that option only render the natural yellow undertown of the wood? Or can I stain it and change the tone and have the natural grain show through?? I n your opinion what stain color would look good with all the different surfaces I have? I would like the backyard to look pulled together. I don't know what color stain would do that.... I know I would like it to look cool either a style to similar to west elm ( relaxed ) or classic yet modern ( restoration hardware). Any advise would be appreciated.

It's really hard to tell from that photo. It looks like it's a heat-stressed rose that got bleached out. So we would need to see what it looks like as a bud.

Omar, are you certain that they have Rose Rosette Disease? Can you provide a photo of the growth? Make it a couple closeups from various locations. If you indeed do have RRD, I would remove the infected bush(es), ASAP. First, spray them with cooking oil quite liberally, then dig them out, roots and all, and place them into large industrial grade trash bags. You can prune them up into smaller pieces/branches as you place them into the bags. Place the bags in household trash. Now go back to the bed where they grew and turn over the soil to a depth of 6" and spray the ground with cooking oil. Don't saturate iit, just enough to make a light barrier. Now, spray all exposed roses with a good conventional miticide. Bayer makes one that should do fine. It's called Bioadvanced 3 in 1 Insect, Disease, and Mite Control. This is a precautionary measure. I would not replant in the location where the infested bushes grew until spring, and after leaf out of any other roses still growing in your garden, to make sure it is safe to do so. Keep a sharp eye on the growth. Look over the varieties of Drifts that are available. Chose the varieties that you like and plant on centers according to the width given for their mature widths found on the label. If the one you choose reaches three feet across at maturity, plant adjacent bushes of that width on three foot centers, and when mature, they will touch each other and very likely grow into one another by season's end. Make sure to give them an annual spring pruning to keep them growing their best. Whether 1, 2, or three gallon sized plant, the spacing is the same, as long as they are the same variety. A bigger potted bush will cost more, but in 2-3 years, the one gallon size should catch up nicely, but the choice is yours. Moses

WELL, I HAD "PLANNED" FOR MY NEW GRANDSON TO CALL ME "GRAMMY". NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE FIRST TIME HE CAME RUNNING DOWN THE HALL IN MY HOUSE WITH HIS ARMS STRETCHED UP TO ME AND YELLED "MIMI", MY HEART WAS LOST! SO "MIMI" IT IS. REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE WANT OR PLAN TO BE CALLED, THOSE LITTLE ONES CAN TUG AT YOUR HEART STRINGS AND CHANGE YOUR MIND REAL QUICK. HE DECIDED WHO I WAS IN HIS LITTLE MIND AND THAT IS ALRIGHT WITH ME. AFTER ALL, "WHAT'S IN A NAME"?

I really wanted to be called Grandma, but my oldest GD settled on Su-su, a variation of my first name. Grandpa has always been grandpa. We lost that darling grandbaby in an accident, so when 2nd GD arrived, only 3 weeks before this, I really wanted to be called Grandma. It stung so much to hear "Su-su" from my DIL, who I think couldn't figure out what to call me, even tho I encouraged my first name. But now that 3 years have passed, it comforts me to hear Su-su from this little one. Maybe a variation of your first name would work for you. I have a friend who is called GranPam. If you don't figure out something you'd like to be called, your little one will figure it out for you.

We're expecting our first great grandchild in June. We have 14 grandchildren and we're grandma and grandpa but I feel these titles will belong to my daughter and husband. Great grandma is combersome so I need something else - any ideas out there for great grandparents (by the way I'm really much too young to be a great)

My brothers son, when introduced to his great grandmother, ...thought for a minute and proudly said "MORE GRANDMA"!!! From then on she was known as more grandma!! By the way, I'm a soon to be first time grandma, also not that old, and can't wait to be called grandma!!! So I guess its just an individual preference, but like sudiepav said...the little one will figure it out for you!!! Really, I think we should enjoy the time we have with our grandbabies, not worry so much about what they call us!
