Good sites for a 10 year old?

I was here before, trying to find a good place for GS to spend time on the puter. I don't care to spend a lot of cash getting games to install, as he is only here short periods, and parents don't have puter yet.

What I am seeking, is a couple good sites he can play games, perhaps make something, don't know what the kids do anymore for enjoyment! The times are so different now, I would like for him to have something respectable for himself, that I don't have to be checking all the time? Is this being too leinient?

Buy him a game. The Reading Rabbit and Jump Start series are excellent. The childrens' sites on the web are not always a safe place for him to be, especially if he knows how to navigate the web. You would have to be checking his access to them all the time. You also do not want to encourage him to go to chat rooms as these are a favorite place for kooks that like to prey on children. I have seen some of the sites that my 10 year old g'son gets to, and I do not think that all of them are suitable.

Learning games are interesting and will keep him amused with a mimimum of your time. There are even ones for the toddler age group. They are not expensive and are well worth every dime. I assume that he may be in the fourth grade. Get him those designed for the fifth grade. They will strenghten his skills.

The simplest "Sim City" games are also good. Stay away from the Disney things as they are just too, too, cutsey to interest a boy.

I let my 8 year old go to cartoonnetwork.com and nick.com. There are lots of free games at those sites. I check on him all the time to make sure he isn't getting into things he shouldn't though. He understands that if he wants to look for something on the internet he needs an adult with him.

Kid's computer games don't have to be really expensive and since he doesn't visit that frequently you only need 1 or 2 of them. Some are as cheap as $10 and few are more then $25. My son likes the Lego computer games and he also has a Chess game that he likes (it's not a kiddie game, but an adult one). Disney will be to babyish for a 10 year old. My 5 year old son likes them, but my 8 year old can't be bothered. We have Reader Rabbit, Math Blaster, and Jump Start. They are all fun and educational and not very expensive. I think they make them for all grade levels (we have K, 1st grade).

Thank you K~s ~ I should probably do that ~ now that for the first time she is behaving in this manner. I did scratched in, some Osmocote around her feet as I did the others ~ should wait a bit then. The only other time all 7 I have, except SAC, behaved poorly was when we had a boggy w/too much rain Jun one year~ followed by oppressive Jul ~ steamed cooked, almost but they survived! We've been getting seemingly incessant rains & intermittent cold days this Spring. I've never tried layering/rooting except for Hydrangeas. Thanks again!

I agree, I would never buy/take a used mattress. HOWEVER, we bought a furnished condo and it came with a bed/mattress and I had no problem using it. I also have no problem sleeping on beds/mattresses in hotels and they are "used", and they are actually "used" by numerous strangers. So, I really don't know why it would bother me to buy/take a new looking, slightly used mattress from very nice and clean looking stranger, but it would... just seems different than sleeping behind strangers in a hotel bed. But, I'm sure there are lots of people that would love to have the used mattress, and if it was between sleeping on the floor and sleeping on a used mattress...I'm sure I'd take the used mattress.

Hi, I just joined the group and saw your question. What I have realized is that 10 year olds today are not the 10 years olds that we were at that age. They know more, and have experieced MUCH more. TV, the Internet and movies have exposed them to things we never dreamed of. My advice is if you can't lick 'em, join em. I didn't see 'Click' but whatever it is, I'm sure your grandson has seen much worse and much better. Don't worry, you won't set him on the path to degradation. Do as much as you can with him. If he'll let you, join him in the things he'd like to do. There's is a very sweet anecdote on the 'grandkids' section on a site called LetLifeIn.com about a grandfather taking his grandson to a Red Sox game. I think it kind of summed it up for me. Well, it is hard to say. Do the old ones really need fixing or is that just how they work as they are 10 years old? How much would it cost to fix them if you can even find replacement parts for them? Is the Maytag Epic reliable? Have you looked for reviews on Maytag Epics? You said you have to leave them behind if you sell the house. Is that required by law where you are? Everyone I know who has moved has always taken their appliances with them unless they were moving into a house with a better appliance than what they already have. If the sale of their house was contingent on it having appliances they just went out an bought used ones or ones from rehab outlets and left those behind. I got my FL as an anniversary gift so if anyone thinks its going to be left behind if I move, they are totally delusional. I'll replace it with something else if I have to, but my machine goes with me. Are you planning on being there long? If not, you might as well keep the old ones and only worry about replacing if it is really needed. Or you can put the new ones in, put the old ones in storage and when you move take the new ones and just put the old ones back. If I remember correctly, the average life span of a FL is about 10 years, but sometimes you get that diamond in the rough that just keeps going. I'm fairly certain that a newer machine, depending on the one you get, would probably clean better than what is there now. It could depend on what detergent you are using too and what stains aren't coming out. The scorching in the drier is definitely a prob as I still have my old TL drier and it isn't scortching any of my clothes, so that definitely needs to be fixed or replaced. Lord knows how much that may cost to fix too, if it can be fixed. I'm hoping some of the questions I posed helped. Unfortunately it is the best I can do to assist you. I use something until it wears out. Depending on my finacial situation at the time, I'll fix said item if that is all I can afford. If it keeps breaking down then I save up to replace it, but your situation is unique as you have to leave them if you move.
