Spooky stories for 6 and 7-year-olds

My niece is turning 7 and she is having a 'sort-of' sleepover this weekend (meaning the girls will be there from 5:00-8:00 in their jammies. I've been placed in charge of two things - spooky stories (apparently my niece feels this is an intrisic part of sleepovers) and hair (another intrisic part).

So, I need stories that are spooky enough for 7 year olds, but not so spooky that they can't get to sleep. In other words, she's definitely bored by stories that go "they were soooo scared but it just turned out to be a cat!" but she's also freaked out by stories where the main characters are actually in danger.

As for the hair - all I know how to do are french braids. The only other thing I could think of was maybe braided pig tails.

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me out on either of these two topics.

TIA!
