Sear garage door probs only move 4 inches

Just moved in and Garage door was in stuck open dorr is down but not connected to opener.hit the button it moves about 4 inches and stops and then goes back. It has no safty switches at the bottom of the door and looks like it never did. Model# 139.18580 I played with the up /down screws to no avail tell me it's somethig silple

Sounds like an rpm sensor problem to me. Pull the cover off you should see a black circle on the back of the motor shaft. Make sure this is pressed all the way on. You will also see a small circuit board with a four prong connector, make sure this is plugged in. If it is plugged in push and pull on the back of the interuptor cup (black circle) and make sure the motor shaft is not sliding back and forth.

May possibly need to replace the opener.
