I'm building a "farmhouse-revival" home, using traditional materials, design, colors, etc, but with a slight touch of contemporary elements. There will be a steep-roofed detached garage about 24'x28'.

The house proper will have standing-seam metal roofing, but I would like something different for the garage to give it more of a barn appearance of a different age than the house itself.

I wish I could say "cost is no object", but it certainly is.

First choice would be re-purposed slate...too damn expensive!

I'm also considering red cedar shingles (or shakes), also probably on the pricey side, but I have not gotten an estimate yet. Asphalt shingles would be out of character...

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
