stanley garage remote won't close door

I have a 1995 Stanley garage door opener. The door does NOT have sensor eyes. I specifically purchased a remote for this opener last week from a site online. I programmed the remote and it opens the door fine. When I try to close the door, the light starts to blink and nothing happens. When I open the door using the wall "doorbell," it opens fine. To close it using this doorbell, I have to hold it down until the door is closed. My handyman just installed the "doorbell."

You may not have sensor eyes but you should have. They were mandated in 1992 and the symptoms you describe are perfect examples of door sensor problems.
