Is is really worthwhile to put a surge protector on a standard garage door opener? Are they fairly susceptible to lightning damage?

Door openers are as susceptible to lightning damage as anything else in your house. I just don't believe a surge protector can do anything when a lightning bolt decides to strike. Lots of people believe they work but I don't.

The motor and drive electronics in the opener are already pretty good at making surges. The rest of the stuff is designed to resist them. I would not waste any time or money trying to protect one with an external surge strip.
