 o
garage door opener

I have a sears garage door opener model 139.53 (1/2 hp)
It works fine however it has developed a loud squeal (which is not steady) when it is operating (in either direction). It appears to be coming from the motor housing- not from the track. Is there any maintenance on the motor end of this? Or maybe the motor is just going out?
Thanks

RE: garage door opener

It sounds like it may be the bearing for the sprocket shaft is worn out. This is a bronze bearing the shaft runs in. Release the door from the opener and then run it and see if the noise lessens or quits. You can also loosen the chain and see if the sprocket will move forward and back. I doubt very much it is the motor.
