Sears Chainsaw

Have replaced the starter pulley spring on my 18" saw and the pulley will not engage the spring loaded levers on the flywheel.

The mounting post on the fan housing broke at its base, thus the new housing, spring, and starter pulley. And rope! Its all reassembled now, but the "catches" on the pulley do not engage the spring loaded levers on the flywheel. They miss by a quarter inch or so. I can see no way to adjust for the difference. Putting a washer or two on top of the pulley mounting post just might raise it enough that the ratchet stub on the bottom of the pulley will then be so high it will not engage with the rewind spring. Anybody got any ideas? Have had this saw since 1983 and its been a jewel. Minor repairs for wear and tear until this event!
