Long story short, we are building a new house, and the driveway can only be 40 ft long. it is straight shot from the street, which is at 100 ft elevation. Because we want the main floor elevation at 95 ft to deal with grading issues off the other side and the back, that would be a 5ft drop over 40ft, or a 12.5% grade for the driveway (not including aprons at top and bottom, which only increases grade). To make the driveway less steep, one option is to raise the height of the garage relative to the house. That would put it at 97 ft elevation (keeping house at 95ft) leaving a 3 ft drop over 40 ft, or a 7.5% grade, which is much more manageable (I think; not really sure how these grades work in practice). All of this background to ask the following question: Because the garage would be at a higher elevation, the ceiling height in the garage would only be 7ft. Is that too short? My architect seems to think there is enough room for the garage lift and our SUV and it won't be an issue. Would like to know your thoughts. Thanks in advance!

Well, I'm an idiot. Just looked and (stupid me) it would be an 8ft ceiling height. Question still remains -- bad design? My options, as I see it: -Whole house at 97 ft, putting main level a little high off the back and off the east side; advantage is driveway not as steep (7.5%)

For a connected garage, I don't think I'd ever like a 2' step down to the main floor, not even a 2' step up. JMHO
