The controls on the side are for the limits they control how far up and down the door goes. The two dials on the back are force adjustments. Locate the down force and turn it up a little bit until the door closes consitently. If the door hits the ground and then reverses you may need to adjust the down limit. You do that by turning the down limit screw clockwise a quarter to a half turn at a time.

You can go to sears website and type in your model number. They may have an online manual there.
