My craftsman garage door would only go down a few inches and then go back up when it was below freezing outside. If I held the button on the wall down the whole time the door was going down, the door would go all the way down. But using the remote opener would not work. Here's how I fixed the problem.

The "eyes" at the bottom of the door are in rectangular plastic boxes mounted in U shaped pieces of metal. I figured that the circuits in those boxes were getting cold and expanding, creating contacts that interfered with their operation. The opener is over 10 years old. So I put coats on them. I wrapped the U shaped metal (sides, top, bottom and back) with rubber pipe insulation (any type of thick good insualation would probably work). In essence I insulated all around the plastic box and metal cover, leaving an opening on the front so the eyes could beam their light back and forth.

Let me know if this works for anyone else or if it's just a fluke that it worked for me.
