Selecting a Dining Set

I have about a 9' x 9' area to set up for dining. I'm not sure what kind of dining set I should look into to maximize that space. I don't want to obstruct traffic to the back patio and there is a baseboard heater on one side of the wall. Should I place an area rug under the dining set to kind of separate the spaces? Any advice would be greatly appreciated including size, shape and materials.

The question is how many need to dine there on a daily basis?
You will be able to get more people around a round table than rectangular. 9 by 9 is a very small area....surely you can push that back into the room more.

I just replaced a 54"round with a rectangle that is 36 x 54. The eating area is between the kitchen and the family room so there is a lot of thru traffic. .

Both seat 6 but we really like the rectangle because it allows more room for people to walk. It also has a butterfly leaf that allows it to open to a 54" square really easily so it can seat 8. We keep the extra 2 chairs in the garage.
