It depends on the configuration.

Some of the things delivery / movers use are:
- Remove screw-off legs

- Hold the piece at an angle (45 degrees rotated forward) The minimum distance will depend upon the height of the arms.

- Put on end and twist the piece around the door frame (insert the top, rotate the piece so the back passed through, then slide through the seat.)

- Some combination of the above techniques

- Remove the door, door stop, and door frame if needed.

I got a call yesterday to see if I could "cut a foot off the end of a sofa so it would fit through an (arched) doorway." I went to look at it and there was just no way without practically re-building the frame and reupholstering the entire thing. I think it would look good in this room right over her.

I've had this problem before. When I purchase my sofa I requested that it could be taken apart outside, pieces brought inside and then put back together. Worked perfect.

Disassembly works on some styles of sofas & sectionals, not all.

Some construction is modular, where the arm and back units are separately upholstered with a "pillow-case" style construction and later bolted onto the deck frame.

It will usually involve removing and replacing the dust cover, and where present, skirt and welt.

A simple test is to see if you can stick your fingers between the deck and inside arm. If you can get your fingers in there, even an inch, it is probably not modular construction.
