How to remove latex paint from old table top.

Hi all,

I was gifted a lovely, STURDY, old library table. (You know the kind--round, with that super-tight grained medium tone wood.) They're the same tables that were in my library growing up, and at my college library (before the renovation that destroyed every last bit of character).

The previous previous owner (yes, two owners ago) bought a bunch of these for her restaurant, and painted the top with some black latex paint. No primer, just latex on top of the 1970's-ish era clear coat. It's begun to chip, and I really want the table top back to the original finish anyway.

What's the best way to get the latex paint off without stripping the original finish, too? I'd rather not refinish it completely, if I can avoid it. Then again, I don't know if there's any graffitti, etc., under the black paint, either. ;oP

Soooo . . . tips, tricks, or suggestions?

Thanks!

Annalea
