Finish on kitchen table is cracking

Last summer, I purchased a new kitchen table set.

About 3 months after I had it, the finish on the table seemed to crack and peel.

The vendor replaced the table and told me it was a defect.

He it is 5 months later and, I have the same problem with the new table.

Vendor has told me that because we put hot cups of coffee and, hot dinner plates on it, this is what's causing it and, basically, you're on your own.

I have had wooden kitchen tables for years....never had this problem.

The set is very nice, matches the kitchen but, the table looks like garbage.

I am going to take them to small claims court to get my 1,000.00 back but, would like to know if, this is my fault or, just a lousy made table.

The table is made in Malaysia.

I can email pictures of the damage...I have plenty of them.

Post a few photos on one of the photo uploading sites.

A few years ago, I worked on a number of tables from a particular manufacturer -- the finish on nearly all of them was failing and peeling.

Damage from hot items is usually very localized. If it's peeling over a large area, I'd say it's a manufacturer's issue. The fact that it's failed before and they admitted damage is probably in your favor.

It would be interesting to know how many other people are having the same problem.

There is also an implied warranty of "fitness of merchantability" meaning that it should work for the use that it was intended for.

Sun exposure and improper maintenance of the table can speed up the cracking to the finish. The old finish can't be saved but you can quickly and easily remove the cracked finish and apply a fresh coat. Choose a topcoat that is non-yellowing and formulated for furniture.

I’m not exactly sure what is causing this problem because we have the same issue with a much more expensive table, after 4 years. I have a dining table that is over thirty years old and never have had an issue like this. The occasional ring from careless guests leaving a glass without a coaster, but never a cracking finish.
I also have 2 side tables that after 10 years have begun to crack and peel. They two were not cheap, but they have inlay on the top, so I’m guessing that is the cause. I’m guessing they are cheaply made; by cutting corners and cheap materials. I hope you received proper reimbursement, David.
