You would have to entirely remove that finish in order to stain.
Are you prepare to do that?

No matter the finish, it will still be a 70's style & will require lots of labor & materials. It's often better to expend the labor refinishing a more classic style piece of furniture.

Have you thought of replacing it with items in a finish you prefer from a local consignment/resale store or furniture purchased on Craigslist? Often great buys can be found with time and patience.
