solids and patterns and stripes, oh my!

So we have pretty much picked out a new sofa, and are down to picking the fabric for it. How to do???

We are agreed on the general color we'd like, and we want something that will hide dirt and spills, and wear well ... but how to decide? I'm feeling so overwhelmed.

What kinds of fabrics are best for a family room, with children? Our last one was chenille-type, and it wore beautifully. We plan to keep the sofa for years, so nothing trendy, obviously.

Micro fiber. You can take cushion covers off and wash. Do not put in dryer but air dry to damp and put back on. If too wrinkled air fluff in dryer without heat. Mine is very heavy velvet like finish. Have done it. My dtr. Also did hers. They are like new. Get medium color of neutral color like gray, taupe, steel blues. Decorate with coordinated pillows in beautiful colors. Look at ideas on Pinterest, houzz.

Many microfibers are not washable so you might want to check if you choose one
