Why do you want a locally-made product?

The original title of the post was 'Coastal cost differential on BY & HM recliners?' I changed it to something more generically likely to help searchers.

I'm assuming we pay a lot more here than those buying closer to the manufacturers in NC etc.

I got a BY recliner circa 1990 I used and loved for 15 years until the leather began to deteriorate, and when I set about replacing it, I found few stores around here carrying them any more. Those that did had very high prices, which I assumed was partly due to shipping from east, and partly due to the intervening globalization-cheapification of most goods we see these days led department stores to be unable to sell them anymore.

[A SIDENOTE: Also there's a, for lack of a better term, 'cultural' issue in that I find interesting: the traditional styles back east remain as popular as ever back there whereas more modernized, less 'fussy' styles seem more popular here. Yet the quality, durability and comfort of such 'sleeker-lines type recliners' is not commensurate with the finer lines of BY & HM.

I'm not sure if this is because fewer people can afford to furnish their homes here in traditional reproductions and antiques, or if it's just a regional identity issue or a mix.]

Also, if good quality comfortable furniture *is* being made here, I'd like to know about it to support the endeavor.
