painting kitchen table, what type of paint

i have a 100 y o farm house table, in rough condition. it has been painted twice, in the last 20 years by my m-i-l, but , and on top of hte last coat, my daughter painted with acrylic paints one day when i wasn't watching. i can't strip it like i plan to do one day -

i read that priming furniture with gesso instead of primer makes a layer that is nice for sanding. I figured this would be a way to smooth out the surface without damaging the antique under the paint. So I've coated, sanded and coated and sanded the table top. It's looking much less damaged, but still looks like painted wood instead of a smooth surface - which i'm glad of.

i now need to paint the entire table one color, on top of hte artist's gesso. what type of paint should i use on a frequently used kitchen table, on a table coated with gesso?

thanks for the help!
