Make a kitchen table from leftover granite slab

I have a granite slab 60 x 30 x 1.25 that I want to make into a table. The slab is very heavy, must weigh around 200 lbs. The table that I want to use as base has a strong base, but a flimsy top. I want to replace the top with something more solid that I can cut to the shape of the table. Any suggestions? Should I use 3/4 plywood?

Wool the top with # 0000 Steel Wool to smooth it, follow with a coat of paste wax.
