Advice on 'protecting' a teak veneer table needed.

I bought a vintage dining set. I LOVE it, but it seems porous and prone to scratches so it's been covered with a tablecloth since we bought it. It's solid wood with veneer on top.

What can I do to protect it so that we don't have to cover it, and can feel ok about using it daily? Getting glass cut isn't an option, it has two leaves.

I was thinking polyurethane. is that a terrible idea? If not, any tips? If so, any alternative ideas? Thank you so much!
