Can you over-clean a couch?

We have a nice couch from Room and Board that's about, oh, 6 or 7 years old, I think. We vacuum it every week (along with the chair we also got) and if I see a spot or stain, I remove it right away with either just water or some kind of upholstery cleaner. If there are crumbs, I dustbust. I've had the couch and chair professionally cleaned about 2 or 3 times (hard to remember these things and I don't keep records). Then I read that it's possible to actually overdo it with the professional cleaning. The couch came with some kind of anti-stain thing which I'm sure has worn off, and when they come to clean it they put something on it (scotchguard? not sure). Anyhow, I read that over-cleaning can "wear down" the fabric and make it deteriorate faster. Anyone have an opinion on this? I figure having it professionally cleaned about every two years is about right, but now I'm not so sure. Thanks!
