how to paint wood on a 1/2 upholstered chair

I have a chair that is 1/2 upholstered and 1/2 wood. I want to paint the wood part, but keep the upholstery. My question is what is the best way to do this without damaging the fabric? Can I remove the upholstery for painting without causing damage then put it back on the chair? Do I try and just tape the upholstery off?

What parts of the chair are wood and what is fabric? You could upload a picture to photobucket and post a link. This way everyone can get a look at the chair and you can get the best answer possible.

assuming it is simply the seat.

look on the underside. Sometimes the upholstered parts of the chair are fabric around a piece of foam atop wood. This is usually fixed into place with screws from the underside of the chair.
