Ottoman size?

I have two slipper chairs in the bedroom. They did not come with a matching ottoman. I just bought an ottoman with same width and height as the chairs it is deeper so it gives a large appearance. Are there any rules on ottoman size with chairs and do you place the ottoman between the chairs for decorating purposes?
