restoring timber furniture with Mother of pearl inlay

Can any one give me any help/guidance? I have cedar timber furniture that has a small mother of pearl inlay, not sure how to strip the old varnish without ruining the mother of pear. Thanks

Why do you think the old varnish needs stripping?

it is cracking, should I just sand it?
